"If you penetrate this one word, people under heaven cannot do anything to you."

Around the year 1100, on the mountain where the Fifth Patriarch of Zen had taught, Wuzu Fayan told his monks to take up a single word, Zhaozhou's "No", and hold to it. From his teaching came the koan practice of Dahui and of the Rinzai school of Japan.

This volume, the first of four that follow one line of masters from Song China to Japan, gives in full the recorded sayings of Wuzu, of Huqiu Shaolong of Tiger Hill, and of Ying'an Tanhua, whose tests in the abbot's room made veteran monks "break into sweat." Their sermons, encounters, verses and last words are given here complete: plain, fierce, funny and exact.

Zen Classics, Volume I. Translated from the Chinese, with an introduction, glossary, bibliography and index, by Rob Newton M.D.
