At dusk you reach an old stone wall at the end of a lane. A woman named Odile appears with a ring of iron keys and opens the first of ten gates. Beyond each gate lies a different quiet garden: herbs, roses, vegetables, moss, an orchard in blossom, a water garden, lavender, warm stones, a night garden of white flowers, and finally a hilltop under an ancient oak.
You walk through them one by one as the light fades. Nothing is asked of you except to notice. The gardens do not mind how long you stay.
This is a story about the kindness of places made and left for whoever comes next. About the deep peace of walking until there is nowhere left to walk. About arriving at a bench under a tree as the last gate closes far below.
