Sintesi dell'editore

In our dysfunctional economy, “success” often comes at great personal cost...we’re tired, we’re stressed out, and we have no time for family and friends. It’s time to redefine “rich”.

From a third-generation farmer and successful entrepreneur, Redefining Rich is an entrepreneur’s guide to balancing work and family with the pleasures of the good life, with simple exercises and important lessons to serve everyone from the new sole proprietor to a seasoned CEO.

Shannon Hayes was in the final months of her PhD program, recently engaged, and beginning to plan her future. Having grown up on a Northern Appalachian sheep farm, she had two advantages: a hard-won education and hillbilly pragmatism. But when it came time to enter the job market, Hayes made a tough discovery: The economy just doesn’t work. It doesn’t work for women, for free thinkers, for the working class, or for white-collar professionals. It doesn’t work in rural America, much less in the cities and the suburbs. It forces us to choose between career and family, profit and creativity.

So, Hayes and her husband walked away from their career paths and chose to forge a life on her family’s frost-plagued mountain farm, starting up a small café in town. Together, they found their sweet spot: a place where the Appalachian farm culture and sensibilities she and her community have lived by helped them thrive, even in a tough economic environment. Against the odds, the Hayes family built a business that lets them live abundantly, spend time with family, and enjoy the gifts of nature. And the business even helped reinvigorate their chronically economically depressed town.

Life changing!

This book really helped me lean into what I have always believed but felt scared to do. Going against cultural norms is hard but it is the life i feel called to. Thank you for sharing your perspective!

Loved!

One of the most helpful books I’ve read in a long time. I really appreciated her perspective and felt really encouraged as I start my own small venture in sustainable farming.

Left me with a lot to think about.

I enjoyed this book very much, lots of helpful information. The only thing I am disappointed with is the audio book did not come with the downloads. I contacted Amazon but they were no help. I might have to buy the book, I feel like this is one of those books where I need a hardcopy to highlight and look back on often.

Roadmap for unconventional thinking and living

I learned about Shannon and this book from Jill Winger’s Old Fashioned on Purpose podcast. The message is exactly what I needed as I transition to self-employment and am seeking more meaning in work in life. The book is a good balance of her stories/experience and concrete ways (and worksheets) to put the concepts into action. The schedule mapping tips and formula for how to say no were especially helpful for a people pleaser like me. I highly recommend for anyone curious about how to create a rich and fulfilling life outside of society’s norms.

Seasoned wisdom with modern perspective

I really appreciated incorporating modern references with what might be called old-fashioned principles. This is a “real” perspective…. Not idealized or fetishized approach to simple living. You can tell Shannon Hayes is well educated and sensible.

Great listen!

Shannon Hayes tells you how she is successful in addition to how you can be successful in a similar way. people This book teaches you how to be successful and happy at the same time, which I have noticed is something a lot of people are not nowadays.

Great narration, inspiring narrative

I greatly enjoyed this listening experience. Not only is the message an important one (how to enter the life-serving economy and define true wealth), the narrator has a warmth and buoyancy that makes the reader feel uplifted and inspired. There is so much actionable advice here! I feel like it’s a book I’ll return to again and again.

True Wealth

Have really enjoyed listening to this alternative view of what real wealth it’s all about. Listening to Shannon Hayes both through this book and in podcast episodes has helped me have the language to better explain some of mine and my sons life choices
