A proposito di questo titolo
Police!!! (1915) is Robert W. Chambers's collection of six macabre-comic mysteries, narrated throughout by the same first-person protagonist — Percy Smith, the excitable young curator of the Anthropological Field Survey Department of the Bronx Park Zoölogical Society. In "The Third Eye," Smith, his friend Kemper and the pretty waitress Evelyn Grey camp on a coral reef to hunt the legendary "three-eyed" race, only to be guided by the sinister, silent boatman Grue into a lethal discovery. "The Immortal" sends Smith into the New York underworld with the streetwise informer Sam Mink to find a man who has supposedly lived for centuries; "The Ladies of the Lake" lands him in a lakeside village dominated by the militant reformer Mrs. Batt and her Ladies of the Lake brigade; "One Over" finds him in a German resort where Professor Farrago, Dr. Fooss and the sinister Professor Lezard pursue a "superior man" experiment, while the loyal, plain-spoken Maine trapper James Skaw reads his own furious letter aloud in protest; "Un Peu d'Amour" brings him face to face with the hot-tempered old painter Blythe and his charming daughter Wilna; and "The Eggs of the Silver Moon" sends him to Singapore to expose a conspiracy hatched by the obsessed entomologist Dr. Quint. Chambers — the author of The King in Yellow — turns every tale into a laughing shiver: absurd expeditions, booming reform brigades, German-accented professors, silent boatmen with hidden eyes, and a narrator who is always the most nervous man in the room.
