Behind the fences stood one of the most ambitious industrial enterprises in American history.
For nearly seventy years, the gaseous diffusion plants at Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Paducah, Kentucky; and Portsmouth, Ohio enriched the uranium that fueled America's nuclear arsenal, powered naval reactors, and helped decide the outcome of the Cold War. Hidden behind fences, classification stamps, and generations of silence, these vast facilities employed tens of thousands of workers who were told only what they needed to know and asked to trust the rest.
Most never spoke publicly about what they saw. Many didn't know what they had been exposed to. Some spent decades wondering.
PADUCAH: The Gaseous Diffusion Legacy is written by Joseph Lischinsky, who served on the U.S. Department of Energy's investigation team assigned to all three gaseous diffusion plants. Drawing on government records, environmental studies, and hundreds of interviews with the workers themselves, he reconstructs a hidden chapter of Cold War history and the human cost behind one of the twentieth century's greatest industrial achievements.
