Bilberry Badger pads up the tunnel to the Front Door, pokes out his stripy face, and takes three long, slow sniffs. “It smells like evening,” he whispers. Bilberry is the youngest badger in the sett. He lives with Mum and Gran. In each cosy story he has a small autumn adventure close to home. He carries fresh bedding backwards along the badger path, counts acorns under the oak, listens to the rain from the Front Door, plays hide-and-sniff with a shy young deer, and watches the first star come out over the meadow. His friends are never far away: Tuppence the wren, chatty Sorrel the squirrel, and gentle Clary the deer.
“Goodnight, Bilberry Badger” is a collection of gentle sleep stories for children aged three to seven, made for reading aloud and listening together. Every story is complete in itself and lasts about ten minutes, with familiar words that come back each evening. There are no villains, no scares and no rush, only warm burrows, falling leaves and good friends. The narrator speaks slowly, softly and warmly, with no music or sound effects.
