Sintesi dell'editore

The worst of nature and the worst of science will bring the human race to the brink of extinction.

Master Sergeant Reed Beckham has led his Delta Force Team, codenamed Ghost, through every kind of hell imaginable and never lost a man. When a top-secret Medical Corps research facility goes dark, Team Ghost is called in to face their deadliest enemy yet - a variant strain of Ebola that turns men into monsters.

After barely escaping with his life, Beckham returns to Fort Bragg in the midst of a new type of war. The virus is already spreading. As cities fall, Team Ghost is ordered to keep CDC virologist Dr. Kate Lovato alive long enough to find a cure. What she uncovers will change everything.

Total extinction is just on the horizon, but will the cure be worse than the virus?

Great listening experience

This audiobook seriously made me feel like I was listening to a movie. Bronson turned Smith's breakthrough novel into a living, breathing story. I can't recommend this one highly enough. If you like post-apocalyptic/science fiction thrillers then this is for you. Probably the best audiobook I've listened to besides The Martian.

Finally! Great Journey

Characters are believable with human emotions - not just the brave "hero." Storyline is captivating with just enough science mixed in. Different take on the normal zombie using bio weapons as we all really think they are being used now. Story moves very fast but author knows how to make you connect with each one.
I want to see what happens next.

Good Fix For Your Zombie Addiction

A lot of the zombie books, I have listened to recently, haven't really focused on the zombies. They have been more about how horrible human nature is and how horrible we would all act in a crisis. This book did have the evil human being. That wasn't the focus of the book. Refreshingly it was actually about ZOMBIES! I don't need a book to remind me of how horrible human nature is. We can get a flavor of horrible human behavior by turning on the TV. The main characters were strong and likable. The narrator did a great job of portraying the different characters. The author's descriptions of the zombies and their carnage was vivid but would not be offensive to even the mildest of listeners. I enjoyed this book so much I purchased the second one while waiting in traffic on the way home.

zombie fans & conspiracy theorists will LOVE this

During the Vietnam war a new weapon was created and used. For 10 years, this new weapon runs amok in the jungles killing randomly and thoroughly. Rage fueled, Brett was the first.

“Only one thing mattered, KILL.”

Years later, Master Sergeant Reed Beckham and his Delta Force Team are told to enter the jungles and find the top secret medical lab and research facility that has gone off line and dark. Beckham and his team enter the facility expecting one enemy only to find another totally different and deadly one. This enemy cannot be seen but it is a deadly enhanced strain of Ebola that turns men, women, and children into raging flesh ripping monsters. The infection is incurable and highly infectious. Once infected, humans turn into destructive beasts that have one common goal – kill.

Kate Lovato, CDC scientist, is faced with saving the world. Rescued and supported by Beckham, she seeks the cure or at worse another deadly monster that will destroy the variant strain of Ebola infected humans. She’s racing the clock as the disease has already spread and with less than 8 days before humankind is extinct, she has to work quickly. Left on a deserted island in a top secret military facility, Lovato creates a weapon but is it the right one?

I enjoyed Extinction Horizon very much. The plot was very well developed with several twists and turns. A cliffhanger ending but then again, when humans are faced with extinction … no one wants it to be over! Characters are well developed; readers are able to connect with all including the man responsible for ordering the weapon. I liked knowing how the disease came into existence and how it spread. There were no questions other than the most important one – how to stop it.

Bronson Pinchot did an excellent job of narration. It was clear who was speaking and words flowed flawlessly.

Production was excellent. No issues with background noises or any other distractions.

Anyone who listens to this book will enjoy it but especially zombie enthusiasts and conspiracy theorists will LOVE this book!

Poorly researched, derivative, clumsy execution

Mr. Smith's novel was a disappointment. Sure everyone has different tastes but I can't fathom how there are so many good reviews. People, you let me down!
There is little, to no creative science behind the plot. The book summary tells you that ebola has turned people into zombies. Even Smith seems to know that ebola would be a terrible choice as a pathogen for a pandemic let alone a virus that could cause human extinction. He has to introduce another overused element into the plot to fix it -the mad scientist playing with nature. It sounds a lot like the rage virus from 28 days later. Even that could have been interesting but a chemical fused to the ebola virus? What does that even mean? I am a scientist and I don't expect actual science in my fiction but I do expect some creativity and not be asked to swallow lazy, ridiculous explanations. All he has done is take the overblown fears of ebola and patch work a lame, overused plot. It is a lazy effort and makes any character development or action, as fun as it could be, a chore to get through. The dialogue is stilted and the characters are very two dimensional. We are treated to continual repetition of thoughts and themes that again seem more like filler and lazy writing than effective development. There is also something very off with the descriptions of the operators and their actions. Again, Smith could do with some research on the subject. The characters just do not ring true but this is overshadowed by the poorly thought through plot.
The narration was also ineffectual and sloppy. Stop spelling out acronyms!

Non-stop action and thrills

If you could sum up Extinction Horizon in three words, what would they be?

Intense, action-packed, topical.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Beckham, great action lead, a badass soldiers and man of honor.

Have you listened to any of Bronson Pinchot’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

First time but he effectively brings the material to life. Great, masculine power to the narration that complements the action-tone of the story. Effective emotional range.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There are some emotional, adrenaline-charged high points to the story that kept me on the edge of my seat.

Any additional comments?

This made for a gripping listening experience. Can't wait for the next one.

BLOOD, IT WAS EVERYWHERE

I WORK FOR MY RANK
UNSPEAKABLE THINGS, happen in this book, such as two dimensional personalities, tough guys who carry pictures of their mommies with them everywhere, and very amateurish writing. Smith shows he has some talent in glimpses such as an airplane scene, involving BLACK RED VOMIT. Smith does lots of telling, mentions BLOOD a lot, but builds very little suspense. I love a good Zombie story and the best I have read was Cell by Stephen King and First Patient by Jonathan Maberry. Unfortunately this seems to be the genre that new authors seem to think they can gain fortune with. They may be right as this has a lot more glowing reviews then I would expect, as do many Zombie books.

Humans: Our Own Worst Enemies

Who was your favorite character and why?

Beckham and Dr. Lovato

Any additional comments?

Nicholas Sansbury Smith really knows his creepy. He really knows what would make his readers' skin crawl. Clicking joints will make me even more queasy from now on. The "zombies" were described so well and written so believably. Actually the way they came about is also seriously believable, too scary, too real. I loved it. Humans, we're our own worst enemy.
A fun, fast-paced, crazy ride. Can't wait to see what happens next!

Intense and Gripping Action Scenes Packed with Suspense

I have listened to and read well over 100 books in the Post-Apocalyptic and Zombie genres and by far have to say this is one of the best. A thrilling and suspenseful mix of horrifying zombies with an excellent plot and story line that builds a relationship and depth with each character. Add to that the realistic and superbly painted scenes you can see, touch, and smell. Nicholas knows his stuff and it shows in this book - Pinchot knocked it out of the park - an excellent combination of writing and narration - don't miss this one! Highly recommended.

What the WWZ movie wanted to be....

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I read/watch/play a LOT of zombie fiction. This book lays the groundwork for a series that can only be described as a killer addition to the genre.

What did you like best about this story?

Honestly, this the story the World War Z movie tried to be. I wish they would have kept that movie closer to the book, and then found Extinction Horizon to make their fast, rage-filled zombie flick.

Which scene was your favorite?

From this book's stellar opening, I was hooked.

Good story let down by below average performance

While the strory is well structred and moves at a good pace the whole audio book experience is let down by poor narration. Someone like R.C. Bray should have performed this novel as it requires much more expression and dynamic input than the Bronson Pinchot could bring to bear.

Great start to a really fun series!

What made the experience of listening to Extinction Horizon the most enjoyable?

I know some reviews are critical of Bronson Pinchot's narration, but I think he's does a great job. He sounds like a gruff, military type.

Have you listened to any of Bronson Pinchot’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I've listen to to the rest of this series and to this work on the Larry Correia's Grimnior Chronicles.

I think he gets more into the story as the series continues so his narration improves.

Any additional comments?

This is the worst rated book in the series as if you don't like book 1, you aren't going to like the next 4 books.

For me, it was a very exciting and well paced book. Perfect gym and running listening material. It kept me hooked and I listened to all 5 books without a break.

Bad Narrations

The narration of this is terrible, almost like bad acting as no emotion seems to be shown by the person reading, guess this is the closest thing to having it read to you by a Vulcan.

Great start to a series!!!

A good start to a book series os one that leaves you wanting more! And this is defenietly one of them. Nicholas writing lets you inmerse into the story, you find yourself wanting to help the Ghost Team and after wanting to help the Scientists. Bronson Pinchot is a believeble reader, the only thing i did'nt like was he finished every chapter emphasising the last few worlds. But that is a personal thing. Over all very enjoyable

The story is OK if you can stick with it past the first few chapters.

After listening to all the audible books from the Arisen series that are currently available I thought I'd try something similar. This series was recommended.

The narrator was quite difficult to get into at the start of the book. The first 6 chapters the narrator just sounded bored and flat but after that the narrator got better.

The story and the characters were ok. There wasn't really any one character that stood out and I never finished a chapter on the edge of my seat but I'm still curious where the story will go next so I have the next book in the series ready to go.

I would have been slightly disappointed if I had spent an audible credit on it but luckily it was part of kindle unlimited.

This is full on horror!

Very scary book, I've listened to a lot of zombie novels and this for me is not the best but the scariest.
