The worst of nature and the worst of science will bring the human race to the brink of extinction.

Master Sergeant Reed Beckham has led his Delta Force Team, codenamed Ghost, through every kind of hell imaginable and never lost a man. When a top-secret Medical Corps research facility goes dark, Team Ghost is called in to face their deadliest enemy yet - a variant strain of Ebola that turns men into monsters.

After barely escaping with his life, Beckham returns to Fort Bragg in the midst of a new type of war. The virus is already spreading. As cities fall, Team Ghost is ordered to keep CDC virologist Dr. Kate Lovato alive long enough to find a cure. What she uncovers will change everything.

Total extinction is just on the horizon, but will the cure be worse than the virus?

Gets you thinking

It's been several decades since Colonel Gibson first destroyed Trevor Brent's life by having him inject VX99 in the deserts of Vietnam. All Gibson found out is Brent went nuts, killed his entire platoon and destroyed a nearby village then disappeared. Gibson didn't give up. He kept modifying and perfecting his weapon.

Operation Burn Bright was supposed to change the way that the United States waged war. It definitely did that. The goal was to create super soldiers, to reduce the number of our boys that had to die for needless wars. Colonel Rick Gibson dreamed of that day. He never knew that he would trigger the events that led to the greatest war ever waged. The war for humanity itself.

Present day: a new strain of the Ebola virus is wreaking havoc in Africa. Fearing that it will make its way around the world doctors decide to play Mother Nature and use VX99 as a potential cure. What could go wrong? The worst of Mankind combined with the worst of Mother Nature is what.

The virus mutates and combines with VX99 and starts to spread like wild fire. The world is scrabbling as this new and devastating disease starts turning people into flesh eating monsters.

Now Captain Reed Beckham and his secret special forces group code named Team Ghost and several other survivors have to try and save humanity. Beckham has to rescue scientists, civilians and politicians alike all while being hunted by an enemy that makes zombies look like a cakewalk.

I really enjoyed this book. I will admit that I was cautious at first because I preferred the typical zombies: you know, mindless, dead and rotting zombies. This book puts a twist on it that I did not expect. With great character development and a story that keeps you wanting more and more you will not be disappointed with this book.

Great listening experience

This audiobook seriously made me feel like I was listening to a movie. Bronson turned Smith's breakthrough novel into a living, breathing story. I can't recommend this one highly enough. If you like post-apocalyptic/science fiction thrillers then this is for you. Probably the best audiobook I've listened to besides The Martian.

A great start to the series

4.75 out of 5 stars

They thought they had a cure for ebola -- what they did have was so much worse. The potential cure ends up turning the ebola patients into crazed monsters out for flesh and blood. Beckham and his Delta Force team thought they'd seen it all when they were called to check out an off-the-grid research center where the virus was being tested. They had no idea what they were walking into.

The narration of Extinction Horizon was done by Bronson Pinchot who does a really nice job. This book is gritty and at times nasty -- having Pinchot narrate it really helped move some of the goriest parts along. My only complaint was that either the author or narrator never looked up or have ever read a book with USAMRIID in it -- even if you jump over to the Wikipedia page about it, you'll quickly see that it's commonly referred to as "you-sam-rid" -- every time Pinchot said it, he said every letter. And it was said enough times that it started to get on my nerves by the end. If you didn't know that or just honestly don't know/care it won't both you at all.

This story was good. Smith really went into detail about the virus (which I really enjoyed) giving the readers a lot of background on the why and the how. A lot of times, books like these will skip over these details because they think they're not needed or take too long to explain, but I'm glad that Smith took a while explaining it. The science behind everything he wrote seemed real to me, which makes this an even scarier book.

The action in this book was brutal. Lots of quick scenes with brutal and needed gore. This is one of those books that I wouldn't have expected anything less. I knew that it was going to be a gore-fest, but Smith made it feel needed.

I thought that the characters were well thought out and explained. Sure some of them are just army hardasses, but there are also people who care and act on emotion rather than on instinct. Even the way that he wrote about the infected people felt emotional and real.

Overall, Extinction Horizon was a great introduction to this absolutely terrifying world, and I'm glad that I'll be reading at least 2 more books in the same world. I also completely understand why there is an entire world open for writers in the Kindle Worlds for this series. There is just so much to cover. So many places and angles that Smith couldn't cover in 10 books if he tried.

scarier than any Stephen King book

this book is very well written and the audible part was finely done. The narrator sped up his voice during chaotic sports but I found myself trying to read ahead to see what happened faster. The characters were all performed very well with a slight difference between characters voices - enough so that you knew someone else was speaking. I would recommend this book to others.

What a start to the series!!

I've had the ebook of this on my kindle for a few years, but kept putting it off, not sure why but I kept thinking it's a case of "same old, same old." Over the years, though, I started seeing more and more of this and the great reviews it was getting, and while browsing Audible, saw it was available. After listening to the sample, it piqued my interest enough to buy it. Over the course of a few months, I bought all of them with my credits and when I downloaded book 6, I started listening.

So this starts with us seeing some American soldiers during the Vietnam war. They were given an experimental new drug that is said to help them turn the tide of the war. They were to become the weapons, it was to make them faster and stronger, but what they unleashed was monsters who killed indiscriminately. Friend or foe, it didn't matter, all they wanted was to kill.

Years later, Master Sergeant Reed Beckham and his Delta Force Team, are called back into action because a top secret lab has gone dark. Team Ghost are told to proceed with caution as this lab deals with highly contagious and deadly diseases. It was currently working on a cure for the outbreak of Ebola that was gripping the nation. Team Ghost suit up and head out, only to discover that everyone in the lab seems to have succumbed to....something and are now something more than human. They are monsters who will stop at nothing to feed.

Narrowly escaping with their lives, Team Ghost arrive back only to discover that the Ebola virus has spread but also, one person from the lab had left before the place went dark, he was infected with this new strain of the virus and changed! The new strain is creating monsters. It is highly infectious and looks like it's also incurable. What can Team Ghost do?

This book exceeded all my expectations and absolutely blew me away. The plot was extremely fast paced and had me on the edge of my seat throughout. Ebola is a horrible and frightening disease but add in what they did with it and it was scary. The results of the outbreak were even more frightening.... The Variants are, plain and simply, monsters. The author also explained the science behind everything in such a way that it was quite believable!! You could easily believe how the Variants came to be.

The characters were amazing! Team Ghost are the best of the best and Reed Beckham has kept his men alive through every mission they were sent on. Now though, the new threats aren't easily killed and it's up to Beckham and his team to help save humanity. I loved the friendship that Team Ghost have. They are brothers and would risk everything for each other, non more so than Beckham. Each of them were well written and developed and you can't help but root for them.

Even apart from Team Ghost, there are a lot of other characters. Dr Kate Lovato being an important one. She is a scientist, one of very few left, that deals with infectious disease. It's up to her to try to find a cure, or a way to kill The Variants. She was extremely well written and was one of my favourites.

Anyway!! This book was phenomenal. Fast paced, action packed, brutal and brilliant, it's a must read for everyone. I devoured it and am so glad I have the next book to dive into straight away. Honestly, this book was amazing and I urge you to go try it. I would so love to see this as a movie or TV series!!! Highly recommend!!!!

Bronson Pinchot was also amazing. I can't believe I haven't listened to anything else narrated by him, though I do have some of them in my TBR pile. He nailed the performance and brought this book alive. His narration was flawless and you could easily follow who was talking. He also did an amazing job heightening the tension and keeping me on the edge of my seat. If I could give this book and the narrator 10 stars, I would.

Good story let down by below average performance

While the strory is well structred and moves at a good pace the whole audio book experience is let down by poor narration. Someone like R.C. Bray should have performed this novel as it requires much more expression and dynamic input than the Bronson Pinchot could bring to bear.

Great start to a really fun series!

What made the experience of listening to Extinction Horizon the most enjoyable?

I know some reviews are critical of Bronson Pinchot's narration, but I think he's does a great job. He sounds like a gruff, military type.

Have you listened to any of Bronson Pinchot’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I've listen to to the rest of this series and to this work on the Larry Correia's Grimnior Chronicles.

I think he gets more into the story as the series continues so his narration improves.

Any additional comments?

This is the worst rated book in the series as if you don't like book 1, you aren't going to like the next 4 books.

For me, it was a very exciting and well paced book. Perfect gym and running listening material. It kept me hooked and I listened to all 5 books without a break.

Bad Narrations

The narration of this is terrible, almost like bad acting as no emotion seems to be shown by the person reading, guess this is the closest thing to having it read to you by a Vulcan.

Great start to a series!!!

A good start to a book series os one that leaves you wanting more! And this is defenietly one of them. Nicholas writing lets you inmerse into the story, you find yourself wanting to help the Ghost Team and after wanting to help the Scientists. Bronson Pinchot is a believeble reader, the only thing i did'nt like was he finished every chapter emphasising the last few worlds. But that is a personal thing. Over all very enjoyable

The story is OK if you can stick with it past the first few chapters.

After listening to all the audible books from the Arisen series that are currently available I thought I'd try something similar. This series was recommended.

The narrator was quite difficult to get into at the start of the book. The first 6 chapters the narrator just sounded bored and flat but after that the narrator got better.

The story and the characters were ok. There wasn't really any one character that stood out and I never finished a chapter on the edge of my seat but I'm still curious where the story will go next so I have the next book in the series ready to go.

I would have been slightly disappointed if I had spent an audible credit on it but luckily it was part of kindle unlimited.

This is full on horror!

Very scary book, I've listened to a lot of zombie novels and this for me is not the best but the scariest.
