Exceptional Story.
Wow is pretty much the sentiment I had when I finished this one! I was literally breathless. The ending killed me!!!! I cried those big ugly tears and.... and my poor heart!!! There is so much I want to say about a certain part but I can't and I'm heartbroken!!!!
Anyways, book 4 is bigger and better than ever. This one sees some new characters introduced, the Variant Hunters! They are sent on a recon mission and discover something that changes everything. The Variants are breeding!! They are also evolving in ways no one predicted.
Meanwhile, after the ending of book 3, Beckham and his team are on edge waiting for the ramifications of their actions. But what comes is more help for Plum Island whilst Beckham and Kate are taken somewhere else.
Kate and Ellis are so close to a breakthrough but when they learn of the kid Variants, their work just got a thousand times harder. Now they need to capture a live specimen of a juvenile to see if the weapon will affect them as much as their parents. There is so much more happening and so much more I want to say but I can't!!!
One thing I love about these books is the characters. It's not often that a book captivates me so much, but this series has. Every single character has captured my heart and I have become invested in their stories. I found myself on the edge of my seat when they go into danger and gasping and cringing and crying with them! It's a testimony to how good a writer this author is, because he made these characters so real, with so much soul.
Every single book so far has been jam packed with action, but this one takes it to new level. I honestly felt like my heart was in my mouth the whole way through, and then we have the battle on Plum Island, and I just broke!! I'm truly finding it hard to put into words just how good this book is, and indeed the series!!! It's always the way with me though, when I read a book that blows me away, I'm always left speechless and just want to say... go buy it now!! Read it and see!!
I also love how over the course of the series the Variants have evolved. Every single book brings something new about them and it's refreshing to see. It shows how much research the author put into them as well. The way it started and the evolution of them to now was seamless and and extremely well executed. I so would love to see this on the big screen!!!
Anyway, in case you can't tell, I love this series and can't recommend it enough. It is action packed, filled with amazing characters, exceptionally written and filled with so much....... awesomeness that this author has made it firmly onto my favourite list!! After reading the first one I went and bought all the rest of his books. Seriously brilliant series and I highly highly recommend!!!!
Again, Bronson Pinchot was amazing. He brought the book to life and nailed the performance. He has a broad range of tones and voices and had the right inflections at the right time.

Great book in a great series!
Stop reading reviews and buy the entire set! You won't regret it, if you enjoy suspenseful action stories that are both written and well narrated!

Good book!
I'm enjoying all of the Extinction books but I get tired of Kate sounding like a whipped dog when the reader reads her parts. There's room for her to be a stronger character and instead she almost sounds whiny. Otherwise, I love the characters and the story is still interesting.

Still GREAT!
It took me months to listen to this book. Not because it was not exciting, engrossing, thrilling, bite my nails suspenseful. It was because I listened to the first 3 in a row. I brought the fourth and fifth books at the same time. I mistakenly started the fifth and was mystified by a whole piece of missing piece information. I was well into the fifth book when I discovered that one of my favorite people were killed and it was not in the book. I was finished. I put the book down. That is when I remembered the other book I down loaded. Since I knew a little of what was going to happen, I could not bring myself to listen to the fourth book as if that would delay what was going to happen.
So, it was months before I started the series again. Within minutes I was in the grip of the story and on the mission with Beckham. This book leaves you with a cliff hanger that will have you downloading the book to start the next one immediately.
Of course, everyone needs saving and those with the power are giving incredibly stupid orders, Trump orders. That is a term I have coined to mean selfish, bigoted, uninformed, arrogant piece of shit. For once Beckham does go against orders but with dire consequence. This was also a difficult listen to because of the human collaborators. There always seems to be men out there who will throw their neighbor under the bus to save their own skin. My heart was heavy at what team ghost endured to save the world and them they come home to discover their home is no longer there. These men will run into gun fire to get the dog tags of a fallen brother and yet brothers are turning on brothers.
The evolution of the beast is phenomenal. They are sentient, which makes it more challenging to fight. They are breeding like weeds and now they have “intelligence” from the human collaborators. Why is it that we imbue characters with human qualities? How would a variant think to make a trophy of his kill body parts. Not trophy but a necklace. Do you realize the many skills required to create to do that? The variants are consumed with feeding their hunger. As humans, we have a growth process in which we explore. Have you watch a small child’s process as they discover each new skill? How is it that they variants learned language? Did each band of variants pick up the language at their location?
So the variants have formed packs and developed a hierarchy with an alpha. What does that mean to you the reader? It becomes a chess game of war with the other side having an advantage. But Beckham and his man “All you take is all you got solider” they are the David against the Goliath. I shudder when they go down in the blood slimed walls in the dark narrow tunnels of New York. You know they will run out of amino, lose a brother, and have a few of those testosterone moments where both species beat their chest.
So after taking a break for months, in the interim, I did try to find a substitute similar series, no luck so I am in the world of Beckham again. Hooah!

Now, the creatures are evolving!
It’s not bad enough that the government created a special virus in order to create super soldiers; it’s not bad enough that the virus has now spread to civilians; it’s not bad enough that the world has less than a third of its human population due to the virus infected variants. No, none of that is bad enough – the government/command central has now fallen, there is very little if any of the government left; the military is fractured beyond belief.
Now, the creatures are evolving! Not only can they think and plan, now they are adapting to their environment – growing gills, scales, and so much more! Kate has to hurry to get the Kryptonite cure done but can she? Can the fractured military dispense it? And to top off all the badness, it seems, Kate and a few others have gone missing after a sudden appearance of variants on Plum Island and a mysterious “white” king. Beckham will have his hands full now!
This book was a natural progression of the variants and the relationship between Kate & Reed. Sadly, some of the other minor but favorite characters had to die. Reed Beckham is dealing with a lot of horror, decision making, saving people and trying to survive.
Like the others in this series, the action was intense. I was saddened with most of the deaths, some I cheered but others I had more than a few moments of grief. Nicholas Sansbury Smith not only forges connections to each of his characters but Bronson Pinchot provides the passionate voice that seals the connection.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is into zombies, military, romance and action. There is not one minute where the author allows the listener to slow down; he keeps the listeners going full force just like his characters!
I love listening to Bronson Pinchot. His narration skills are excellent - he feels the excitement and projects it into his character voices capturing the attention of the listeners. Not many people have the range to do voices for both genders, but Pinchot does and does it very well.
There were no issues with the production, it was excellent.

Everything You Want and More
This series is great!. Action and drama never quits. Just when you think you have it figured out - Variants evolve and change the rules. More than just a "zombie" story - these things are scary fast - tricky- sly and cunning. We used to hunt them - now they are hunting us.
Right in the middle of chaos and war with the Variants, the Variants attack what everyone thought was "safe" place. The island is overpowered and the Variants take prisoners (including the only person that can find a cure) - for food!.
Unfortunately for the Variants however is the fact that Beckham and his team are not going to stop until they get all their friends and family back - even if it kills them.
Narration is one of the best, he brings it all to life.
Fast-paced action - great story and narration keeps you right there. Can't wait for the next Book.

Audio book causes physical reaction...
This book was effing awesome. Nick Smith writes a story so vivid, you find yourself physically jerking as if you can help the characters by punching monsters. Bronson Pinchot, again, adds his amazing talent to just blow your mind with this story. Nick Smith fan for life.

The wild apocalypse ride continues!
Less than 5 million humans remain while 500 million variants are now rapidly reproducing. Book 5, the final book titled Extinction End, is due for release in Kindle format on Feb.29 and the audiobook is to follow on March 15.
This is a great apocalyptic series that MUST be read in order!

Decent story lines... It's just the character names!!!
This is a good series if you're into zombies and the such as it has a quite a different spin on the usual zombie story line. My only gripe is the names of some of the characters... Thomas and tank for example... Guessing the author is a fan of Thomas the tank engine?! And it took me a while to get over the main characters name 'beckham'... And then of course there's Steve-o. It feels like there's not been much thought going into names. Like I said, it's my only gripe! I'm just starting book 5 so the author must have done something right!
