The nightmare continues for the new vampire's assistant in the second installment of the New York Times best-selling Saga of Darren Shan.

Darren Shan was just an ordinary schoolboy until his visit to the Cirque du Freak. Now, as he struggles with his new life as a vampire's assistant, he tries desperately to resist the one temptation that sickens him, the one thing that can keep him alive. But destiny is calling. The Wolf Man is waiting.

Great book

It was a great book I read when I was younger and revisiting it was great.
My only complaint is that they don't do a package deal with them sense they are so short

just and overall fun book

lots of ups and downs, creating a real sense of attachment to the characters. Ralph Lister does a fantastic job voicing the characters and their implied emotions.

I can listen to Ralph read this series for years!

The book and the narrator were a perfect mix! I loved this series to begin with but with Ralph's tremendous storytelling, just made it even more perfect. Even more thrilling, even more emotional, and even more irresistible.

interesting book

The story line was good, however parts kind of dragged. I was disappointed with the ending. There was so much more story that wasn't finished. The narrator was awesome.

It's a struggle to like these characters.

For starters, I get Darren is a kid, and therefore it's natural for him to be so immature, but honestly I spent majority of this book still wanting to punt him across the room with my foot. for starters, he lacks so much self awareness it's almost PAINFUL. The way he's constantly rude to and blames his mentor for turning him into a vampire literally has me wanting to tear my hair out. The kid has the biggest victim complex ever as if he didn't wind up in this situation because of his own stupidity and is now faces the consequences of said stupidity. He CHOSE to sneak out of his house with Steve to see the damn circus, he CHOSE to steal that spider, he CHOSE to sacrifice himself to become a vampire's apprentice to save his friend Steve. Point being, he always had a CHOICE.

He's constantly screaming like a rotten little shit about how much he doesn't deserve this and hates his mentor when his mentor could have easily killed him for stealing his spider and left Steve to die. The funny part about this is that in spite of his mentor showing him so much leniency (because Mr. Crepsley really could have done what Vampires were known for and really hurt him) Darren still acts as if his mentor is pure evil in spite simply by nature of being a vampire.

Then, for whatever reason, he makes the biggest fuss about not wanting to be blooded but he literally sucked the blood from a kid's knee in the first book, which at the time the blood seemed so delicious to him, and is never mentioned again in this book. If I didn't know better I would think I hallucinated that whole thing, but it was the moment that officially gave his secret away to his friend Steve that he was a vampire. Seriously, I get the transition from human the vampire can't be easy, especially for a kid, but Darren just takes it to a whole new level of stupid and annoying. At some point in the book I was just thinking to myself "Alright, just shut up and die then, jeez".

Throughout this whole book the only moment I actually started feeling good about Darren was when he dealt with that obnoxious vegetarian or vegan whatever. Too bad the moment was ruined later though. At the very least, I sort of hoped that "Reggie Veggie" would come to the realization of his own hypocrisy and stupidity, but in the end he stupidly blames Darren for what happens and runs off so you don't even feel satisfied with how his role in the story ended. Just frustrated.

The whole story is kind of frustrating honestly, because there are so many "...if only I had done this..."s or "I never should have...."s. And you're just sitting there like WELL NO SHIT. So many actions seem to lack logic, much more than the first volume.

Anyway, at this point, the book is not really worth reading. I am going to get the next book however (only because it's included free with my subscription) and I've already come this far I might as well. I have some hope the story might improve, but I am really not expecting much. I hope at least now that Darren is blooded he becomes a bit more tolerable as a character.

Surprisingly good

My five year old son had me download this for bedtime based on the picture and I am enjoying it more than him lol. I listen to it in the car now and was surprised how enjoyable a story it is.

Great narration

Great narrator, but too many Americanisms for a British accent.

Not sure where the story is based, maybe that's on purpose as locations aren't named. But an Irish writer including words like soccer, read in a British accent doesn't feel right

Would be better if they matched, some words are jarring coming from Ralph.
