A young woman lies alone in her room, out of step with her age. The world around her is one of noise, cheap fashion and machines, and she longs for a beauty that seems to have left the earth. Then she opens a magazine and reads a few lines of free verse, and something ancient stirs.
Sleep takes her. A winged messenger comes to her bedside and carries her up through the clouds to Olympus, where the old gods still sit and where the great poets of the ages are gathered. There she is told a secret about her own century, and about a voice that will bring the gods back into the world.
Written in 1920 in collaboration with Anna Helen Crofts, Poetry and the Gods is one of H.P. Lovecraft’s most unusual works: a lyrical dream vision rather than a horror story, filled with classical myth and a deep nostalgia for lost beauty.
Listen to the complete, unabridged audiobook of this rare early tale by the creator of the Cthulhu Mythos.
