Alice is bored. Sitting on the riverbank beside her sister, with nothing to read but a book without pictures or conversations, she is just beginning to wonder whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble — when a White Rabbit runs past her, looking at his watch and muttering that he will be late.
She follows him down the rabbit-hole, and nothing after that is ever the right size. She grows too large for the house of the White Rabbit and too small for her own feet. She swims in a pool of her own tears, argues with a caterpillar smoking a hookah on a mushroom, takes tea with a Hatter who has stopped at six o'clock forever, plays croquet with a Queen who shouts for executions, and finally stands as a witness in a trial about stolen tarts where the rules of evidence have been abandoned entirely.
Lewis Carroll's 1865 book began as a story told to three sisters on a boating trip up the Isis, and it still reads like one: nonsense that is somehow stricter than sense, and jokes that work on children and scholars at the same time. This unabridged recording presents the complete text, narrated by Alex Mercer.
