The same dreadful warning arrived for John’s father two years later. Shortly afterward, he perished after falling into an unfenced chalk pit, deemed an accidental death. Now the threat has reached John himself, with a grim instruction: place the family’s hidden papers upon the garden sundial.
Holmes quickly identifies the symbol as the mark of the Ku Klux Klan, the violent post-Civil War secret society. The colonel fled America carrying documents that could incriminate its members, and the organisation’s agents—sailing aboard merchant vessels—have hunted his bloodline across the ocean to recover the evidence. Holmes urges John to follow the instructions for survival, yet fate cruelly intervenes.
This sombre story departs from Holmes’ usual triumphs. Despite the detective’s brilliant deductive work and desperate efforts to track the killers, the cycle of revenge cannot be stopped. A powerful meditation on unavoidable fate, transnational crime and the limits of human foresight, *The Five Orange Pips* remains one of the most memorable and tragic Sherlock Holmes adventures.
