Georges Lorant, der Polizeipräfekt von Paris, hat seine Jagd auf Arsène Lupin verstärkt. Grund dafür ist eine Reihe von Einbrüchen, für die der Polizeipräfekt Lupin verantwortlich hält. Dieser hat erneut Post von seinem unbekannten Auftraggeber bekommen. Der Meisterdieb soll eine wertvolle Goldmünze, auf der Ludwig der Vierzehnte abgebildet ist, dem Privatsammler Remi Bambeau stehlen. Lupin gelingt es, von Monsieur Bambeau als Butler eingestellt zu werden. Doch dann durchkreuzt ein Einbruch in Remi Bambeaus Haus seine Pläne und er muss sich erneut anonym an Auguste Dupin und Edgar Allan Poe wenden.
