The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is the original title of a novel written by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson that was first published in 1886. It is about a London lawyer named Gabriel John Utterson who investigates strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll and the misanthropic Edward Hyde.

It's when Hyde turns to murder that Jekyll realizes how monstrous his impulses are and how hard they are to suppress.

When an old pirate gives him a secret treasure map for safekeeping, Jim Hawkins is excited to finally have some adventure in his life. Jim assembles a pirate crew, finds a sailing ship, and sets course for the destination where he expects to find treasure beyond his wildest dreams. Along the way, he will have to learn how to protect himself and his loyal crew from the scoundrels who turn against him.

This volume starts with the famous M. R. James story of occult revenge, "Casting the Runes", about a slighted occultist out for murderous revenge using his diabolical black arts to achieve it. It was adapted into the equally chilling movie Night of the Demon in 1957. Next up is another famous classic, W. W. The novella has gone on to inspire scores of major film and stage performances. The work centers around Dr. Jekyll, one man with two personalities, one apparently good and the other evil.

The classic story, told in the first person by Jim Hawkins, whose mother kept the Admiral Benbow Inn, and who shared in the adventures from start to finish. An old sea dog comes to this peaceful inn one day, apparently intending to finish his life there. He hires Jim to keep a watch out for other sailors, but despite all precautions, he is hunted out and served with the black spot that means death. Jim and his mother barely escape death when Blind Pew, Black Dog, and other pirates descend on the inn in search of the sea dog’s papers. Jim snatches up a packet of papers to square the sailor’s debt, when they were forced to retreat from the inn.

Dr. Jekyll is a caring doctor who experiments with drugs because he's certain that within each man lurk impulses for both good and evil. He soon discovers a drug to liberate the evil side within himself, becoming the hard drinking, woman-chasing Mr. Hyde. Jekyll quickly becomes addicted to the formula, unable to control the violent and unstable Mr. Hyde.

A couple of days into the voyage, a shipwreck throws David together with David Break, a Scotsman returning from political exile in France, and the two of them journey together.
