On Liberty by John Stuart Mill. On Liberty by John Stuart Mill is an essay about individual freedom and its limits. Mill argues that people should be free to think, speak, and act as they wish, as long as they don’t harm others. He believes this freedom leads to progress and happiness. Governments and society shouldn’t control people’s choices unless those choices hurt someone else. On Liberty is pertinent to contemporary debates about free speech, personal rights, and social control and so retains its relevance, perhaps more urgently than ever. Mill’s work is key to a proper ...

Ghost Stories of an Antiquary by M. R. James. Montague Rhodes James (1862-1936) was a medieval scholar; Provost of King’s College, Cambridge. He wrote many of his ghost stories to be read aloud in the long tradition of spooky Christmas Eve tales. His stories often use rural settings, with a quiet, scholarly protagonist getting caught up in the activities of supernatural forces. The details of horror are almost never explicit, the stories relying on a gentle, bucolic background to emphasise the awfulness of the otherworldly intrusions. “Ghost Stories of an Antiquary” was written as ...

Areopagitica by John Milton. The noblest and most extensive defense of freedom of the press in English. Although Milton was sufficiently practical to serve as a censor of books himself when his opposition to this practice was ignored by the government, he never lost his conviction that the best way to battle falsehood was to let it have its say and be defeated by the superior power of truth. Strangling infants in the cradle was simply not his style. In this long essay, in the form of a five-part Classical oration addressed to Parliament (the counterpart of the Areopagus or council of elders ...

A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs. John Carter is mysteriously conveyed to Mars, where he discovers two intelligent species continually embroiled in warfare. Falling in love with a princess of red humanoids (two-armed but egg-bearing), he contrives a daring escape and later rescues the red men from the hostility of another nation of their own race. In this struggle he enlists the aid of ...

The Willows by Algernon Blackwood. "The Willows" is one of Algernon Blackwood's best known creepy stories. American horror author H.P. Lovecraft considered it to be the finest supernatural tale in English literature. He wrote in his treatise "Supernatural Horror in Literature", "Here art and restraint in narrative reach their very highest development, and an impression of lasting poignancy is produced without a single strained passage or a single false note." "The Willows" is an example of early modern horror and is connected within the literary tradition of weird fiction.

The story follows a group of men who venture into the remote wilderness on a hunting expedition. The Ghost Pirates by William Hope Hodgson. "The Ghost Pirates" by William Hope Hodgson is a horror novel published in 1909. Told as the testimony of Jessop, sole survivor of the doomed ship Mortzestus, the story chronicles strange events that escalate in frequency and terror. Mysterious beings—never clearly described—gradually commandeer the vessel as the crew struggles between disbelief and mounting dread. Hodgson leaves their true nature ambiguous, suggesting they may be ghosts or entities from another dimension that has breached into our world, though their origin and purpose remain ...
