Efter att hennes sjuke man gått bort ser Anki Karlsson fram emot att börja ett nytt liv. Äntligen ska hon ta upp sitt ungdomsintresse, ridningen. I Mullvalds socken på Gotland spirar våren och Anki Karlsson njuter av livet som pensionär och hästägare. Hon ska ge sig ut på långritt och får tips av sin gode vän Tryggve om en trevlig prästgård i Smissarve där hon kan övernatta. Själv ska Tryggve resa utomlands, och när han letar efter sin resväska hittar han något som rör upp gamla minnen. Det är anteckningar från ett av hans första fall som polis - ett fall som förblev olöst men som Tryggve lade ner mycket tankemöda på.

Det är i mitten av november och i gotländska Mullvalds är planeringen av årets tryffelfestival i full gång. Med hjälp av guider och lagottohundar kommer deltagarna få leta tryffel i naturen och sedan avnjuta den exklusiva delikatessen i sex olika rätter under en helkväll på socknens restaurang. Anki Karlsson har bjudit med sig sina tre väninnor från fastlandet - Lena, Gunilla och Ingegerd - och tillsammans ska de njuta några härliga dagar med ridning, god mat och inte minst varandras sällskap.
