Was bedeutet es, wenn man sich in einer Welt voller Werwölfe und Vampire seine eigenen übernatürlichen Kräfte nicht erklären kann? Emma Ballamy ist eine junge erfolgreiche Polizistin und kurz davor Detective beim Londoner CID zu werden. Doch ihre letzte Station während ihrer Ausbildung wird ausgerechnet die Supernatural-Squad. Die Abteilung, die sich mit den übernatürlichen Bewohnern der Stadt, wie Werwölfen und Vampiren, herumschlägt, gilt allgemein als Karrieresackgasse.

Die faulste Hexe der Welt, Weihnachtsfeiern, ein Weihnachts-Schmuck-Raub und andere Katastrophen. Man sollte meinen, dass Ivy die Weihnachtszeit mit einem warmen Kakao auf einem weichen Sofa gemütlich und entspannt begehen wird. Allerdings hat sie da noch nicht mit übermotivierten Kolleg:innen gerechnet, die sie zu Weihnachtsfeiern einladen wollen - und ganz sicher hat sie nicht damit gerechnet, dass der Diebstahl von Weihnachtsschmuck zu einer riesigen Feiertagskatastrophe führen könnte.

Um Freunden dabei zu helfen, einen Fluch aufzuheben, hat Mack beschlossen, sich an der Magier-Akademie ausbilden zu lassen. Doch kaum hat sie die geheiligten Hallen betreten, ist sie umgeben von unfreundlichen Erwachsenen und launischen Teenagern - und alle scheinen nur darauf aus, Mack scheitern zu sehen. Da sie sich so unter Beschuss fühlt, gerät Macks Temperament - ein heißer Zorn, die seit jeher in ihr schlummert - jedoch immer weiter außer Kontrolle.

Lass die Magie fliegen! Nachdem sie den Klauen von Corrigan, dem Lord Alpha der Bruderschaft, entschlüpfen konnte, versucht Mack sich nun auf ein ruhiges Leben in der ländlichen Idylle von Inverness. Weit weg von allem - insbesondere fort von den Gestaltwandlern. Als Mack dann noch einen Job in einer kleinen Buchhandlung ergattern kann, scheint das Leben perfekt zu sein... für einen kurzen Moment! Denn die Besitzerin des Ladens - eine rätselhafte ältere Dame - scheint nicht nur ein Faible für Kräuterkunde zu haben, sondern weiß auch mehr, als sie vorgibt.

Um eines direkt klarzustellen: Ivy Wilde ist keine Heldin. Eigentlich ist sie die allerletzte Hexe auf der Welt, die man rufen würde, sollte man magische Unterstützung benötigen (was nicht heißt, dass sie es nicht könnte!). Ginge es nach Ivy selbst, würde sie am liebsten den ganzen Tag auf der Couch hängen, Serien gucken, Junkfood mampfen und mit ihrer Katze Streitgespräche führen. Doch durch einen Bürokratiefehler wird Ivy Opfer einer vertauschten Identität und unfreiwillig - sehr, sehr unfreiwillig!

Mackenzie Smith hat nun endlich ihre wahre Wyr-Form gefunden - und das ist kein Zuckerschlecken! Ihre Gefühle, ihre Herkunft und Fähigkeiten sorgen für ordentlich Verwirrung. Zudem obliegt ihr eine riesige Verantwortung: Sie muss den fragilen Frieden zwischen Wandlern, Magiern und den Fae bewahren, um den tödlichsten und furchterregendsten Gegner der Anderwelt zu Fall zu bringen. Dass ihr Seelengefährte, sie bis aufs Blut hasst, macht die Sache nicht leichter.

It's a fine line between pleasure and pain. Fast sieht es so aus, als würde es für Mackenzie Smith endlich etwas ruhiger laufen, nachdem sie in London bald ihren Buchladen eröffnet - wären da nicht die schrecklichen Albträume von Drachen, die sie heimsuchen. Oder eine Bande von Magiern, Gestaltwandlern und Fae, die Mack auf Schritt und Tritt folgen und nach ihrer Aufmerksamkeit verlangen. Als eine Dryade dann auch noch Mack um Hilfe bittet, scheint das Chaos perfekt. Dass ihr dabei aber Corrigan (aka Lord Pelzi!) in die Quere kommt, summiert das Ungemach gewaltig.

Kaum hat die Hexe Ivy Wilde ihre flüchtige Bekanntschaft mit der Nekromantie abschütteln können, stolpert sie direkt ins nächste bizarre Abenteuer voll Tod und Teufel und Katastrophen. Sie kann auch definitiv nichts dafür, aber sie ist nun mal der einzige Mensch auf der ganzen Welt, der mit den Toten kommunizieren kann... und die sind leider wirklich, wirklich schwatzhaft. Als Ivy dann auch noch von den Geistern Infos über einen hexenhassenden Serienkiller erhält, hat sie keine andere Wahl, als die ganze Angelegenheit selbst in die Hand zu nehmen.

Ivy Wilde, die faulste Hexe von Oxford, befindet sich noch immer in den bürokratischen Fängen des Heiligen Ordens der Magischen Erleuchtung. Was tatsächlich nur noch so semi-schlimm ist, denn so kann Ivy ungehindert Zeit mit Raphael Winter, ihrem saphirblauäugigen Untergang, verbringen. Als er dann noch ihre Fähigkeiten benötigt, um für ihn am Set der Serie Verwünscht (Ivys absolute Lieblingsshow!) zu spionieren, ist Ivy sofort Feuer und Flamme. Denn wenn man etwas so sehr liebt, dann kann der Auftrag auch nicht schwer werden. Oder gefährlich. Oder etwa doch...?

Forced to attend anger management classes and deal with the predatory attentions of Corrigan, the Lord Alpha of the shapeshifter world, her emotions start to unravel.

After escaping the claws of Corrigan, the Lord Alpha of the Brethren, Mack is trying to lead a quiet lonely life in Inverness in rural Scotland, away from anyone who might happen to be a shapeshifter. However, when she lands a job at an old bookstore owned by a mysterious elderly woman who not only has a familiar passion for herbal lore but also seems to know more than she should, Mack ends up caught in a maelstrom between the Ministry of Mages, the Fae and the Brethren.
