No civilized culture has failed to recognize the importance of education. And it is widely acknowledged that in today’s fast-paced society, success depends on the ability to swiftly understand and use information. What lies behind the crisis in education? Are some subjects simply hard to teach? Are some teachers just not good at imparting knowledge? The proposed solutions are as varied as the problems, but many are based on labeling students as unable to learn, instead of identifying the real failure.

It has been bought and sold in a thousand dramas. It has been preached about from every pulpit - debated, contested, condemned, and exalted. And with no means to accurately measure or quantify it, the physical sciences either ignored it or denied its very existence. The human soul. Here, then, is a discovery all the more remarkable for being grounded not merely on faith and belief, but on proofs as irrefutable as any in science.

Originally written and published in national magazines to coincide with the release of Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health, here is L. Ron Hubbard’s own story of his developmental trail and two-decade journey to the discovery of the Reactive Mind. That’s why Evolution of a Science is the story of the greatest adventure of all—the exploration that discovered the Reactive Mind and the technology to conquer it. He wrote it so you would know.

Realizing the answers lay in neither the sacred wisdom of the East or the rigid academia of the West, Ron embarked on the perilous quest for a way to free the individual from the barriers that deny him happiness. And in recognizing that Man is both a spiritual and a material being, he arrived at the breakthrough discovery from which all else followed. Here, then, is the record of that victory and the historic achievement of a state never before known in this universe - a state called Clear.

Here is a story that begins with Ron’s immersion in a deeply spiritual, deeply traditional Asia, where he met and befriended - among other savants - the last of the great magicians whose predecessors served in the court of Mongol emperor Kublai Khan. Yet notwithstanding the feats that testified to remarkable powers, here was a land where wisdom was deemed sacred - so sacred, in fact, these Oriental holy men declined to use their considerable abilities to solve the real and urgent problems of living.

Every human being seeks to know the truth about himself and to resolve to his own satisfaction the mysteries of life. And therefore, for many thousands of years, countless philosophical and religious teachings have sought to enlighten people with answers. But where their practitioners insisted - indeed, demanded - that their answers must be the answers, they blocked the road to greater freedom for millions of people.

"Our route was the accomplishment of an observation platform fromwhich a man could observe and from these observations make uphis own mind. And that observation platform is what we call Clear." (L. Ron Hubbard)

What is life? Such was the central question Ron posed when setting out to unravelthe riddle of human existence. After examining all aspects and elements of existence, he arrived at an altogether startling discovery - one which suddenly clarified all life’s various phenomena: Life is a game. In this lecture, Ron explains why life is best understood by likening it to a game, whereupon he defines both its prerequisites and conditions, showing that it follows the rules of any game.

The single word liberty articulates not only basic rights, such as freedom of speech and religion, but many other vital concepts: opportunity, choice, security, and even happiness. Indeed, it is a word that symbolizes the dreams and goals of every human being. Yet its very power makes it liable to abusive ends entirely opposed to its true meaning. In consequence, both individual and national freedoms can be eroded in a manner that escapes detection. If this deterioration of liberty is not spotted and reversed, a people can lose many of their basic rights and ultimately fail to recognize, and thus arrest, a slide into a police state.

Released on May 9, 1950, Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health became an overnight publishing sensation. Immediately hitting The New York Times best seller list and remaining there for 26 consecutive weeks, it was unquestionably the most popular book ever published on the human mind - a distinction it holds to this day. So great was the excitement that, virtually overnight, some 750 Dianetics groups sprang up across the United States....

As the number of countries with atomic and nuclear weapons has risen and an international black market actively trades nuclear materials, action is likely to prove a far stronger deterrent than hope. To be effective, that action would have to address the real source of the danger. Does it lie in the awesome destructive power of modern weapons? Is it the damaging effects of the radiation that would creep across continents? Or does the actual cause lie elsewhere?

To overcome tyranny is to win freedom as a people, anation or even Mankind. Yet to benefit fully from theirliberties, each man and woman must also be free—as individuals. In regard to freedom as a nation, here is the remarkable story of how one man, the Athenian statesman Pericles, envisioned a better future for Mankind—a future free from tyranny. Thus developed a principle at the heart of modern civilization....

What motivates life? What motivates Man? Those were the questions Ron posed when seeking workable answers to the problems of both the individual and society. After examining the whole of life in its variety and complexity, he isolated a common denominator to all living things - the Dynamic Principle of Existence: Survive! Here was a watershed breakthrough in Man’s understanding of Man. For while “everyone knows” that life forms are surviving, survival as their sole motivation was a brand-new discovery.

Through his extraordinary journey to the founding of Dianetics and Scientology, Ron did just that. From his adventurous youth in a rough-and-tumble American West to his far-flung trek across a still mysterious Asia; from his two-decade search for the essence of life to the triumph of Dianetics and Scientology - such is the story Ron recounts in a lecture so legendary, it has been heard by millions.

In this classic statement on the individual’s search for truth, Ron therefore delineates the central principles that make Scientology different - the principles whereby each person engages in his own personal search to discover truth. As individuals continue on this unique quest of exploration and adventure, they acquire new insights and understandings until their fundamental questions about themselves and life are resolved to their full satisfaction. And increasingly, as they travel that road, they attain the lasting freedom that can only come from knowing what is true for them.

From the dawn of time, Man has cherished the hope he could achieve a greater freedom. That hope, articulated by the greatest religious leaders across the centuries, has time and again renewed his strength to face the future. But with no practical means to convert hope to reality, the goal of a greater freedom remained, for most if not all, a distant and unattainable dream. Then, with the onset of the twentieth century, came the rapid and unprecedented advance of the physical sciences. Yet, at the same time, these sciences limited their research to the material world....

Here, then, is a discovery all the more remarkable for being grounded not merely on faith and belief, but on proofs as irrefutable as any in science. Using the most exact tools of thought to isolate the most in exactly understood aspect of a human being, Ron established that there is, indeed, a soul.

Since the deployment of the first atomic weapons, people everywhere have lived with the possibility that everything they hold dear - their lives, their families, their careers and even the human species itself - could be extinguished in a few moments of devastation. Such consequences would be so overwhelming that, for many, the only defense is a hope it will never happen.
