Yksi hylkää lapsensa päiväkotiin sulkemisajan jälkeen, toinen tekee samoin Intian viidakossa - jättäen lapsensa tiikerin, karhun ja suden hoiviin. Rudyard Kiplingin klassikko Viidakkokirja on kertomuskokoelma intialaisesta Mowgli-pojasta, joka kasvaa viidakossa villieläinten parissa. Tästä asetelmasta nousee myös kirjan teema: millaista on tulla hylätyksi ja tämän jälkeen muiden, tässä tapauksessa villieläinten, ylösnostamaksi - teema, jonka monet voivat lukea kaikuna kirjailijan omasta lapsuudesta. Mowgli oppii kuitenkin selviytymään viidakossa luonnonlakien ehdoilla.

"The Jungle Book" (1894) is a collection of stories by English Nobel laureate Rudyard Kipling. The stories were first published in magazines in 1893-94. The original publications contain illustrations, some by Rudyard's father, John Lockwood Kipling. Kipling was born in India and spent the first six years of his childhood there. After about ten years in England, he went back to India and worked there for about six and a half years. These stories were written when Kipling lived in Vermont.

Including the stories "Lispeth", "Beyond the Pale", and "In the Pride of His Youth", this collection tells of soldiers, wise children, exiles, forbidden romances, and divided identities, creating a rich portrait of Anglo-Indian society. Originally published for a newspaper in Lahore when Kipling was a journalist, the tales were later revised by him to re-create as vividly as possible the sights and smells of India for readers at home.
