Il rapporte une série d'événements se déroulant sur plusieurs années : Esther, d'origine juive, devient la favorite du souverain, Assuérus. Or, sous son règne, le grand vizir - Haman - intrigue et obtient de pouvoir exterminer toute la population juive. Devant pareille menace, Mardochée fait appel à sa cousine Esther afin qu'elle obtienne du roi l'annulation du décret qui les condamne.

"Le livre des Lamentations" ou "Lamentations de Jérémie" est un livre du Tanakh et de l'Ancien Testament. L'auteur est anonyme. Il est constitué de cinq poèmes déplorant la destruction de Jérusalem, probablement composés en Judée ou par des Judéens en exil. Il est traditionnellement attribué au prophète Jérémie. Son contenu se rapporte à une période entre 598 av. J.-C., date de la première déportation, et la prise de Babylone par Cyrus en 538 av. J.-C.

"Le livre de Malachie" est un livre de l'Ancien Testament. Malachie insiste beaucoup sur les dysfonctionnements du culte et invite ses auditeurs à y remédier promptement: payer les dîmes, immoler des bêtes en bonne santé... Il dénonce les fraudes qui sont de vaines tentatives de tromper Dieu. Le prophète considère que les Israélites qui épousent une païenne trahissent leurs ancêtres. Il s'inscrit dans la perspective des livres d'Esdras et de Néhémie.

"Le livre de Habacuc" est un livre de l'Ancien Testament. Habacuc est un prophète de Juda qui parla de l'état pécheur du peuple, peut-être au cours du règne de Joaqim, roi de Juda (env. 600 av. J.-C.).

"Le 1er livre de Samuel" est un livre biblique qui fait partie des Livres historiques dans l'Ancien Testament chrétien et des "Livres des Prophètes" (Nevi'im). Le livre se concentre sur la vie de Samuel ; puis sur le règne tragique du premier roi d'Israël, Saül, choisi et oint par Samuel ; et enfin sur l'essentiel de la vie de David, dont la narration s'achève dans "le 2e livre de Samuel". Il couvre une période d'environ cent ans correspondant à peu près à la vie de Samuel.
