Philosophisches Werk? Erzählung? Wie auch immer - Zarathustra ist ein epochemachendes Werk. Nach langjähriger Einsiedelei begibt sich Zarathustra unter Menschen, um ihnen vom Übermenschen zu erzählen und seine Weisheit mit ihnen zu teilen - doch erfährt er nur Hohn und Spott.

Den Fortschritt durch rationales Denken zu fördern - das forderte die Aufklärung. Der erste, der eine Definition der Aufklärung lieferte, war Immanuel Kant in seinem berühmten Essay aus dem Jahre 1784.

Was passiert mit dem Individuum, wenn es sich in einer Gruppe wiederfindet? Wie ist es zu erklären, dass intelligente Menschen sich in der Masse zu Dingen hinreißen lassen, die sie als Einzelne niemals tun würden? Gustave le Bon beschrieb 1895 in seinem Standardwerk diese Mechanismen. Es ist erstaunlich und spricht für den Autor, dass die eingängig erklärte Analyse zeitlos wirkt und die Hörer den Eindruck gewinnen, das Buch sei tatsächlich viel jünger.

Im Jahr 1849 schrieb Henry David Thoreau seinen weltberühmten Essay über die "Pflicht zum Ungehorsam gegen den Staat". In diesem stellte er sich außerhalb einer Gesellschaft, die, obwohl auf den Prinzipien der Freiheit und Gleichheit aller gegründet, nicht in der Lage war, die Sklaverei abzuschaffen. Neben "Walden" der wohl berühmteste Text des Eigenbrötlers aus den Wäldern von Massachusetts.
