Kommissar Maigrets Frau Pauline grämt sich wegen eines verpatzten Abendessens. Dabei stecken noch ganz andere Qualitäten in ihr: Denn als der Buchbinder Steuvels durch eine anonyme Anzeige beschuldigt wird, eine Leiche in seinem Heizofen verbrannt zu haben, und als ein kleiner brauner Koffer auftaucht und auf mysteriöse Weise wieder verschwindet, ist Maigret mit seiner Weisheit am Ende. So beginnt Pauline, das Rätsel hinter einem Brief ohne Unterschrift und Absender, Maigrets Geisterkoffer und einem weißen Hütchen selbst zu lösen.

Im viertklassigen Hotel Nordstern wird ein Mann mit einem Dolch ermordet. Am Tatort entdeckt Kommissar Maigret einen seidenen Damenstrumpf unter dem Bett. Auf der Suche nach dem fehlenden zweiten Strumpf macht er sich auf eine Reise durch die Damenwelt des Hotels, um die Mörderin oder den Mörder zu finden.

Eine Schneiderin schickt Maigret einen verzweifelten Hilferuf. Denn ihr Geliebter, Albert, soll bei einem Einbruch auf dem Boulevard Beaumarchais jemanden erschossen haben und die verzweifelte junge Frau erhält seitdem Drohbriefe.

Ein mysteriöser Serienmörder sucht reiche Männer auf den Straßen von Paris heim, die Schmuckgeschenke zu ihren Geliebten bringen wollen. Der König wendet sich an Fräulein von Scuderi, die die Taten mit einem Bonmot abtut. Dann jedoch erhält sie ein Schmuckkästchen mit einer Notiz des Mörders. Fräulein von Scuderi wird klar: Sie muss dem Übeltäter auf die Schliche kommen! Die erste moderne Detektivgeschichte war ein Vorbild für weltbekannte Autoren wie Edgar Allan Poe oder Arthur Conan Doyle und bescherte uns eines der beliebtesten Literaturgenres: den Krimi.

Ist denn dem armen Maigret niemals Ruhe vergönnt? Selbst am Weihnachtsmorgen machen zwei Nachbarinnen dem Kommissar ihre Aufwartung und haben höchst Sonderbares zu berichten. Die kleine Colette behauptet steif und fest, den Weihnachtsmann gesehen zu haben. Denn wer sonst hätte der weißbärtige Mann sein können, der sich in der Weihnachtsnacht an den Bodendielen zu schaffen machte, um ein Loch zu bohren? Als Beweisstück kann die Kleine eine brandneue Puppe vorweisen.

Als wie aus heiterem Himmel der junge Schriftsteller Sim auftaucht und Kommissar Maigret mit seinen Geschichten behelligt, wird dessen Leben gehörig auf den Kopf gestellt. Denn abgesehen von der gemeinsamen Liebe zum Pfeifenrauchen könnten diese beiden Herren unterschiedlicher nicht sein. Umso ärgerlicher ist es da, dass der Schundbuchautor auch noch die Dreistigkeit besitzt, Maigret zur Hauptfigur seiner Romanreihe avancieren zu lassen. Maigret zeigt sich pikiert, zumal dieses literarische Ebenbild seiner selbst ihm gar nicht recht gefallen will.
