En man ligger i sitt rum och lyssnar på något i väggen. Det krafsar, slafsar och fräser. Vad är det? Är det råttor som ränner runt i väggen? Engelsmannen Henry Masham är på semester i Italien. Avsikten är att det ska vara avkopplande, men han blir snart utsatt för ett mordförsök. Upplevelsen traumatiserar honom svårt, men han träffar tur nog den trevliga men ytterst excentriske Lord Ruthven. De bestämmer sig för att slå följe och resa vidare tillsammans genom Italien. Sakta men säkert börjar Henry misstänka att det är något som Ruthven inte vill berätta, att hans melankoliska ögon gömmer en hemsk hemlighet.

Fyra veckor har gått sedan det stora utbrottet, och det värsta tycks vara över. Dammet från blommorna har lagt sig som en mörk skugga över landet, men de smittade utgör inte längre något hot. Plötsligt täcks träden av löv i en nyans ingen sett förut - en onaturlig och intensiv röd.

I den här klassiska romanen, där en av dramats huvudpersoner skickas på ofrivillig affärsvisit till ett osedvanligt vampyrtätt slott, fick figuren sitt verkliga genombrott och senare genom de många filmer som gjordes, inspirerade av romanen. Den mest flitige tolkaren av greven torde vara Christopher Lee, men boken har även gjorts till serie på Netflix (2020).

När ostindiefararen Götheborg år 1745 närmar sig land så händer något oförklarligt. Trots den erfarna lotsen går fartyget på grund och förliser. I ren desperation gör besättningen sitt yttersta för att rädda den dyrbara lasten. Kaoset gör att ingen märker när båten med de svarta seglen försvinner iväg med ett mystiskt bylte. Vad är det de smugglar iland? Två och ett halvt sekel senare får den ockulta detektiven Maphalda besök av en skärrad klient.

"The Thing in the Weeds" is a short story by William Hope Hodgson from his "Sargasso Sea Stories" in which he portrays a monster lurking in the darkest recesses of the unfathomable depths of the sea. An example of Lovecraft’s major principle of "fear of the unknown", the terror in this Hodgson story is a mysterious one, despite the fact that it haunts and kills the characters.

A prisoner arrives at a trial before the Spanish Inquisition and is condemned to death. Upon his conviction, he faints and finds himself in a horrendous cell to fight off death. Still, this prisoner is not giving up that easily and describes his horrendous circumstances to the last detail. "The Pit and the Pendulum" by Edgar Allan Poe is nothing short of grim until the very end.

Egaeus is a man who can get lost in matters with "nervous intensity of interest". He is about to marry his cousin Berenice, whose health is deteriorating until the only part the disease has not touched are her teeth. It is those teeth, which fill Egaeus' mind and continue to haunt him to a terrifying degree. "Berenice" by Edgar Allan Poe dates back to the 19th century and was considered shocking upon its publication. The horror short story has been adapted onto film, including the 1954 short film Bérénice. B. J.
