Thomas Paine's The Age of Reason; Being an Investigation of True and Fabulous Theology, published in three parts from 1794, was a best seller in America, where it caused a short-lived deistic revival. Promoting a creator-God while advocating reason in the place of revelation, Paine’s controversial pamphlet caused his native British audience, fearing the results of the French Revolution, to receive it with more hostility than their American counterparts.

The Age of Reason by Thomas Paine. The Age of Reason; Being an Investigation of True and Fabulous Theology is a pamphlet, written by a British and American revolutionary Thomas Paine. The Age of Reason challenges institutionalized religion and challenges the legitimacy of the Bible, the central sacred text of Christianity. Published in three parts in 1794, 1795, and 1807, it was a bestseller in the United States, where it caused a short-lived deistic revival. Part 1 was written sometime in 1793, and attacks the concepts of divine revelation and inspiration. He urged his readers to employ ...

In these volumes, Paine demonstrates the anonymity of the books contained in both the Old and the New Testaments, the only certainties being that most of them have been incorrectly ascribed to the persons whose names they bear and that they cannot be proved to be the “word of God.” Calling himself a deist, he identifies the physical universe and every individual’s private conscience as the only infallible revelations of the Almighty’s power, character, and will. His argument is based on reason and common sense, and his sole scholarly resources are the words of the Bible itself. He ...

In Age of Reason, Thomas Paine boldly challenges the authenticity of the Old and New Testaments, revealing that many biblical books have been misattributed to their supposed authors and cannot be definitively proven as the “word of God.” As a self-identified deist, Paine argues that the physical universe and each individuals conscience are the only true revelations of the Almightys essence and will. Grounded in reason and common sense, he uses the Bible itself as his sole scholarly resource to critique the biblical depiction of God, whom he views as a cruel and capricious figure, starkly ...

Col. Ingersoll begins his lectures on famous people as follows: "It is hard to overstate the debt we owe to the men and women of genius. Take from our world what they have given, and all the niches would be empty, all the walls naked—meaning and connection would fall from words of poetry and fiction, music would go back to common air, and all the forms of subtle and enchanting Art would lose proportion and become the unmeaning waste and shattered spoil of thoughtless Chance." One of the most famous orators of his day, a contemporary and personal friend of Mark Twain and General Grant,...
