It is Christmas and a little boy receives a gift - a velveteen rabbit. Although the other toys look down on him, the rabbit is happy to be with the boy. The Velveteen Rabbit is the classic tale of a beloved stuffed rabbit who, while once fluffy and huggable, has become worn out and threadbare after years of being loved. He is saved after being discarded and taken to Rabbitland, where he becomes “Real” and is cherished for the rest of time.

There was once a velveteen rabbit, and in the beginning he was really splendid. He was fat and bunchy, as a rabbit should be; his coat was spotted brown and white, he had real thread whiskers, and his ears were lined with pink sateen. On Christmas morning, when he sat wedged in the top of the Boy's stocking, with a sprig of holly between his paws, the effect was charming.

Given as a Christmas gift to a young boy, the Velveteen Rabbit lives in the nursery with all the other toys, waiting for the day when the boy will choose the wisest resident of the nursery, who reveals the goal of all nursery toys: to be made "real" through the love of a human.

What does it mean to become real? That’s what the velveteen rabbit wants to know. Having been gifted to a small boy, the velveteen rabbit becomes a beloved toy. But he is troubled, for he cannot hop like the rabbits outside. When his young owner becomes sick with scarlet fever, the velveteen rabbit faces an even greater question: Will he escape the fate of the other toys and books in the germ-ridden nursery? Or will he somehow get away and discover a new kind of life?

Did you know it takes the true love of a child to make a toy real? Well, when the Velveteen Rabbit becomes the newcomer in the little boy's room, he must go on a journey to earn the true love of the boy so he may become real.
