The Subjection of Women is a pioneering essay by John Stuart Mill, possibly co-authored with his wife Harriet Taylor Mill in 1869, that fervently champions gender equality. Mill constructs a powerful case against the societal and legal inequalities that women endure in a patriarchal world. Drawing parallels to his earlier work, On Liberty, he argues for womens liberation on utilitarian principles, positing that their moral and intellectual development will enhance overall happiness for society. This compelling treatise is a call to action for a more equitable future. (Summary from Wikipedia)

John Stuart Mill is regarded as one of the most influential thinkers of the Victorian Era. In this speech, he defends the practice of capital punishment. He states, “I defend this penalty, when confined to atrocious cases, on the very ground on which it is commonly attacked - on that of humanity to the criminal; as beyond comparison the least cruel mode in which it is possible adequately to deter from the crime.” Though written in the 1800s, Mill’s argument is still relevant in contemporary discussions of capital punishment.

On Liberty is an 1859 philosophical treatise by the English philosopher John Stuart Mill (1806 - 1873) which applies an ethical system of utilitarianism to society and the state. Mill starts with a brief overview of the meaning of liberty and proffers his basic argument in favor of liberty for the individual, to the degree that it harms no one else. The value of liberty of opinion and liberty of action are set forth in two chapters.
