What do you do when the Christian institutions that should have loved you actually wounded you—but you still feel connected to divine love?
Dr. Nathan Page's story begins with childhood sexual abuse at 8 years old by a female babysitter who told him nobody would care. Convinced he didn't matter, didn't belong, and had no value, Nathan encountered something unexpected: a voice from the divine telling him he was deeply loved.
That relationship with divine love sustained him through decades of toxic shame, suicidal ideation that began in childhood, maladaptive coping mechanisms, and eventually deconstruction from Christian institutions that didn't reflect the love he knew.
Today, Nathan is an ordained spiritual director—a practice that sits at the intersection of spirituality and therapeutic work, helping people deepen their understanding that they are, in fact, deeply loved by something greater than themselves.
In this transformative episode, we explore:
✨ What spiritual direction actually is and how it differs from therapy
✨ The practice of holotropic breathing and accessing "thin spaces" where the veil between seen and unseen thins
✨ Why silent retreats create profound discomfort—and profound healing
✨ How people with ADHD can find stillness by riding the wave instead of fighting it
✨ Nathan's personal journey through abuse, shame, and finding purpose in helping others
✨ Creating safe spaces for people hurt by religious institutions
✨ Why divine love (or universal energy) meeting your attachment needs matters
✨ The difference between hearing you're loved and believing you have self-worth
Nathan's work through Barely Spiritual Direction helps individuals and couples cultivate healthy attachment with themselves and with divine love—however they understand it. This conversation is for anyone who's been hurt by religion but still craves spiritual connection.
