  • Mechanics Monday: The Deep Wing — Five-Man vs. Six-Man Mechanics
    Oct 21 2026

What does it take to be an effective deep wing official? From pre-snap keys and receiver coverage to goal-line responsibilities, punts, and dead-ball officiating, this episode of Whistle Talk breaks down one of the most demanding positions on a football officiating crew.

Mike D the Referee is joined by John Devaney from New Jersey and Adam Holloway from Wisconsin to explore the similarities, differences, and challenges of working the deep wing in five-man and six-man mechanics.

John shares his experience transitioning from five-man to six-man mechanics, while Adam discusses his background in five-man football and his growing experience with seven-man NCAA crews. Together, they offer practical insights into positioning, communication, judgment, and developing confidence at the deep wing position.

    • Five-Man vs. Six-Man Mechanics: Understanding the Back Judge's responsibilities in a five-person crew compared with the Field Judge and Side Judge in a six-person crew.

    • Pre-Snap Positioning and Keys: Reading offensive formations, identifying receiver keys, maintaining the proper cushion, and staying alert on every down.

    • Run-Play Responsibilities: Reading the play, recognizing potential holding, managing dead-ball situations, and knowing when to assist your crew.

    • Pass Coverage and Receiver Responsibilities: Managing trips and empty formations, sharing coverage responsibilities, and adjusting when routes cross or develop into new deep threats.

    • Goal-Line and End-Line Coverage: Knowing when to protect the goal line, when to move toward the end line, and how to maintain a good viewing angle without sacrificing the call.

    • Punt Mechanics: Positioning, fair-catch signals, beanbag mechanics, recognizing potential kick-related problems, and communicating with the rest of the crew.

    • Preventive Officiating: Why meeting with punt returners before the game and explaining expectations can prevent confusion.

    • Developing as an Official: Learning from experienced officials, asking questions, studying film, observing varsity crews, and seeking immediate feedback.

Adam emphasizes the importance of asking questions, watching game film, and learning from experienced officials. John challenges officials to be intentional about developing their deep wing skills by identifying strong mentors, observing them work, and asking questions before and after games.

The deep wing position is about much more than watching the play from the back of the field. It requires preparation, movement, communication, awareness, and the ability to stay focused when the action appears routine.

  • Inside the White Hat: A Deep Dive into R Mechanics
    Sep 30 2026

What does it take to be an effective football referee or R/White Hat?

In the first episode of Whistle Talk's Mechanics Monday series, Mike D the Referee breaks down the R/Referee position using the 2026 NJFOA Six-Official Mechanics Manual as the primary reference.

This episode focuses on one of the most important concepts in football officiating: know where to be, know what to watch, and know when to transition.

    Mike covers:

    • R pre-snap positioning and keys
    • Counting the offense and communicating with the crew
    • Quarterback and tackle coverage
    • Run and pass-play mechanics
    • Maintaining the proper quarterback cushion
    • Roughing the passer and intentional grounding
    • Forward and backward pass responsibilities
    • Punt mechanics
    • Extra-point and field-goal mechanics
    • Penalty administration and announcements
    • Measurement mechanics
    • Reverse mechanics and goal-line coverage
    • Crew communication and leadership
    • The R's mechanics self-check

The episode also emphasizes that mechanics are not just about an individual's position. Effective officiating requires the entire crew to work together, communicate, support proper coverage, and maintain consistent mechanics.

  • The Role of the Football Assignor: How Officials Get Assigned
    Sep 23 2026

What does a football assignor actually do?

In this episode of Whistle Talk, Mike D the Referee sits down with Jeff Kinney from Washington and Phil Porter from West Virginia/Ohio to take an inside look at the role of the assignor and how officials are selected, developed, evaluated, and assigned to games.

Assigning is much more than simply putting officials on a Friday night game. Jeff and Phil explain the planning, relationships, evaluations, communication, scheduling, crew management, and decision-making that go into putting the right officials on the right games.

We also get into one of the biggest questions officials have:

How do you earn those bigger games and postseason assignments?

🏈 What the role of a football assignor really involves🏈 Assigning individual officials vs. complete crews🏈 How schedules are built months in advance🏈 Managing limited numbers of qualified officials🏈 Thursday night games and scheduling flexibility🏈 Handling officials who need time off for family🏈 How playoff assignments are determined🏈 Evaluation systems and postseason selection🏈 Why communication between assigners and officials matters🏈 Using Hudl and game film for development🏈 How officials can earn better assignments🏈 Supporting officials who are moving up🏈 Recruitment and retention challenges🏈 Advice for officials looking to reach the next level

One of the biggest themes throughout the conversation is communication and preparation. As Phil explains, officials need to understand what they can do to continue improving, while assigners need to communicate what officials need to work on and keep them engaged in the process.

Jeff also discusses the importance of giving officials opportunities to develop rather than simply putting an inexperienced official into a difficult varsity assignment without support.

And if you're an official looking to move up, Jeff and Phil have some great advice: put in the work, study film, learn from veteran officials, attend big games, and continue challenging yourself.

    Sep 16 2026

In this episode of Whistle Talk, Mike D the Referee dives into the NJFOA Officiating Standards & Principles and the mindset officials should bring to every game.

Mike covers the three core competencies: knowing the rules and case plays, using consistent mechanics, and understanding the intent behind the rules.

    The discussion also focuses on:

🏈 Fairness, safety & game flow
    🚩 The three-question flag test
🛡️ Player safety and illegal helmet contact
    📍 Pre-snap discipline and positioning
🏈 Pass interference, holding & blocking
    🦶 Kicking game responsibilities
    ⏱️ Time, score & late-game situations

    🔥 Sportsmanship and unsportsmanlike conduct
    🔄 Resetting after every play

The goal is simple: protect the players, maintain the integrity of the game, and make the best ruling based on what you actually see.

A special thank-you to the NJFOA contributors who helped develop the officiating manual and standards used as the foundation for this discussion.

  • 🏈 Five Officials, One Crew: Mastering 5-Man Mechanics
    Sep 9 2026

Five-man mechanics look simple until you’re the one on the field trying to make every key matter.

If you officiate—or coach—save this and send it to someone who still thinks “everyone just watches the ball.”

    👇Here’s the truth:

    • Every official has a very specific job before the snap.
    • The crew succeeds when everyone knows their zone, not when everyone chases the same thing.
    • Good mechanics create cleaner coverage, better spots, and more confident calls.

That’s why I keep coming back to the same idea:

Positioning first. Keys second. Everything else follows.

In the latest episode of Whistle Talk, we break down five-man mechanics, including kickoffs, punts, pass coverage, goal-line responsibilities, penalty enforcement, and crew communication.

What’s the hardest part of five-man mechanics for you—kickoff, pass coverage, or goal line?

  • Rule 8: Scoring Plays, Touchbacks, Force & Momentum
    Sep 2 2026

Rule 8 brings some of the most interesting—and sometimes confusing—situations in the NFHS Football Rules Book. In this episode of Whistle Talk, Mike D the Referee is joined by Daniel Chamberlain and Coach Chip Seagle for a deep dive into scoring plays, touchbacks, safeties, force and momentum.

The crew breaks down the rules and then puts their knowledge to the test with challenging case plays from the NFHS Case Book.

    🏈 Scoring Plays

    • Touchdowns, field goals and tries

    • Fouls during scoring plays

    • Penalty options following touchdowns and field goals

    • What happens when a fumble ends up in the opponent's end zone

    🏈 Touchbacks

    • When a kick becomes a touchback

    • Touchbacks following punts and free kicks

    • What happens when the ball becomes dead in the end zone

    • The NFHS touchback signal

    🏈 Force

    • What "force" means in NFHS football

    • Initial force vs. new force

    • Muffs, bats and illegal kicks

    • Why force is not a factor on certain plays

    • The three questions officials need to answer when determining force:

      1. Whose goal line did the ball cross?

      2. Who forced the ball across the goal line?

      3. Who has possession?

    🏈 Safeties & Momentum

    • When a play results in a safety

    • The momentum exception

    • The difference between a touchback and a safety

    • How the spot of a catch or recovery can affect the result

Mike, Daniel and Coach Chip work through several Rule 8 case plays involving:

    • Fumbles into the end zone

    • Illegal kicking

    • Muffed punts

    • Interceptions

    • Backward passes

    • Force

    • Momentum

    • Touchbacks

    • Safeties

Some of these plays look simple—until you start applying the actual rule.
