Are you considering pursuing graduate school on a part-time basis, or are you already balancing your studies with work, family, or other responsibilities? This week's episode of "Victors in Grad School," hosted by Dr. Christopher Lewis, delivers a can't-miss financial primer for anyone navigating the evolving world of graduate student loans and part-time enrollment. In this informative episode, Dr. Christopher Lewis tackles a subject that's often overlooked: how recent changes to federal student lending will impact part-time graduate students. With the flexibility that part-time programs offer—allowing students to maintain employment, care for loved ones, and juggle personal commitments—it's no wonder more learners are considering this path. But, as Dr. Christopher Lewis points out, the new lending rules require careful, proactive planning to ensure your academic goals remain within reach. Key Themes from the Episode: Loan Proration and Enrollment Intensity: Dr. Christopher Lewis clearly explains the concept of loan proration—the idea that if you're enrolled less than full-time, your federal student loan eligibility is adjusted downward, sometimes significantly. He stresses the importance of understanding your institution's definition of full-time, as it directly affects your financial aid. Strategic Financial Planning: Part-time study can still be possible, but Dr. Christopher Lewis encourages listeners to ask detailed questions about how their course load will affect both their tuition bills and their borrowing eligibility. Gaps in funding might need to be filled with personal savings, employer tuition assistance, scholarships, or payment plans. Employer Tuition Assistance & Program Comparison: One actionable tip is to leverage employer-sponsored tuition reimbursement, which can contribute significantly to covering costs over multiple years. He also urges students to compare the long-term costs and benefits of part-time versus full-time enrollment, including time-to-degree and access to career advancements. Proactive Questioning & Planning: Dr. Christopher Lewis empowers students to treat their course schedule as a key part of their financial plan and not just an academic decision. By planning ahead and understanding all policies, students can minimize surprises and maximize their investment in education. If you're a current or prospective part-time graduate student—or support someone who is—this episode is packed with practical advice and critical insights. TRANSCRIPT Dr. Christopher Lewis [00:00:02]: Welcome to Victors in Grad School, where we have conversations with students, alumni, and experts about what it takes to find success in graduate school. Welcome back to Victors in Grad School. I'm your host, Dr. Christopher Lewis, Director of Graduate Programs at the University of Michigan Flint. Really excited to have you back again this week. And this week, I'm going to be talking to you again, and we're going to be talking more about finances, about things that are going to be important as you're making those decisions for your future. Today, we're going to be continuing to talk about the things that you should know and that you should focus on, that you should focus on, especially if you are part of a group of graduate students who are incredibly common, incredibly motivated, and sometimes overlooked in conversations about graduate school financing. So today we're going to be talking specifically about being a part-time graduate student. Dr. Christopher Lewis [00:00:54]: For many students, part-time graduate study is not just a preference, it's what makes graduate school possible. Part-time enrollment allows students to keep working, care for children or family members, maintain health insurance through an employer, manage financial responsibilities, and pursue a degree without stepping away completely from their personal or professional lives. For working professionals, especially part-time graduate programs can be practical and powerful paths forward. But upcoming changes— But the new changes in federal student lending could affect how you as a part-time student finance your degree? Because you see that under the new federal lending rules, students who enroll less than full-time are going to have to have their annual federal loan eligibility reduced based on their enrollment level. So in plain language, what does that mean? It means that if you take fewer courses, that may also mean that you're going to be able to borrow less in federal loans. So that doesn't mean that part-time graduate school is no longer possible. It absolutely can be. But it does mean that for those students that are going to go part-time, you need to plan carefully.
