What does following Jesus look like when you leave church and return to everyday life? And how do you share your faith when you are afraid of what others might think? This Evensong sermon from Christ Church North Adelaide explores the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry in Luke 4, with his baptism in Luke 3 as its starting point. Led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness, Jesus faces hunger, isolation and temptation. His responses point us towards God’s word as a source of spiritual nourishment and guidance when our own resolve feels weak. The sermon connects these wilderness temptations with familiar pressures: the desire to fit in, the attraction of material rewards and the need for other people’s approval. It also acknowledges a tension for those exploring Christianity: being drawn to Jesus while struggling to trust the institution of the church. Beautiful buildings, music and liturgy can enrich worship, but the call to discipleship reaches into our homes, workplaces and relationships. Following Christ involves learning from his example, resisting temptation, sharing our experience of faith and inviting others into Christian community. Jesus’ rejection in his hometown also reminds us that an invitation may not always be welcomed. Whether you are beginning to explore faith or have worshipped for years, consider one practical step this week: spend time with Luke 4, reflect on where approval shapes your choices, or have an honest conversation about what faith means to you. The invitation is to carry what we receive in worship into the people and places of daily life.
