Machel Montano was an amazing host at Rise and Toast this past Sunday and I got to be in the King of Soca's presents. It was something that he said that really raised the question of, why is it always Reggae vs. Soca? And is there a clear front runner?

This year has brought so much to our community and now it also has taken some of it away. Let’s take the time to be proud of the music that makes us one big family. Soca literally means the '(So)ul of (Ca)lypso.' We aren’t new to this world and are Professionals in our own right. With soca in our soul there is nothing that we can’t do together. West Indie strong, we will be The Last One Standing.

It is always great to have someone to share in your life experiences when you're growing up and in this case, I got to grow up alongside my cousin, Melissa. Please welcome her to the podcast as we continue this week's discussion of "Fresh Off the Boat" as first and second generation West Indie women in America. This week we will talk about what it’s like growing up in Miami and New York and our best advise for keeping the culture alive.           

And just like that, the year is about to come to an end. This time of year is great for gathering and spending time together and reflecting on the year and even years past, but sometimes that is easier said than done.
