  • Hidden Chemicals in Our Everyday Environment
    Oct 23 2026
Look around the room you are in right now. How much plastic can you see? Water bottles, food packaging, clothing, toys, hand sanitizer, even the phone in your hand. Plastics and forever chemicals are woven into nearly every part of modern life, and the conversation about what they mean for our health is only getting louder. This episode of Wellness Wednesday brings that conversation home in a way that feels practical instead of scary.Dr. Brett sits down with Dr. Hatch, a renowned expert with over 30 years of experience helping people. Dr. Brett has spent more than two decades helping patients and teaching other healthcare providers, and the two have been friends and colleagues for a very long time. Together they walk through the Six Steps to Wellness framework Dr. Brett uses, where toxins are one of six major factors that can help or hinder health, and they dig into the one that is hiding in plain sight. What Are Forever Chemicals and Why Are They EverywherePlastics became popular in the 1950s and have grown more present in daily life ever since. Dr. Hatch points out how different childhood was just a generation or two ago. A toy truck used to be made of metal. Today nearly every toy, container, and package is plastic, which means children are being exposed earlier than ever.Dr. Brett breaks down the terms people keep hearing: phthalates, BPA, BPS, microplastics, nanoplastics, and PFAS. Many of these are grouped under the name forever chemicals because they do not break down easily. They show up in plastics, packaging, coatings, fragranced products, and the water and food supply. How Hidden Chemicals Interact With the Body’s Hormone SystemsOne of the most eye opening parts of this conversation is the link to the endocrine system. Dr. Hatch shares that he had long understood how plastics relate to hormones, but his research this week helped him connect the dots to other glands like the thyroid, the hypothalamus, and the adrenals. When people walk in exhausted all the time, he realized reducing plastic exposure may be a missing link alongside nutrition and supplementation.Dr. Brett adds that nanoplastics are small enough to pass through some of the body’s natural protective barriers. He also explains that highly active tissues with strong blood flow, such as the thyroid and adrenal glands, tend to take up these substances more readily. Hormone disruptors, heavy metals, herbicides, and pesticides all belong in the same conversation. What the Research Shows and What It Does Not Yet ShowDr. Brett is clear that scientists do not yet fully understand the long term effects, and there is not complete human clinical data showing that one exposure causes one outcome. His personal view is that no level of phthalates or heavy metals is healthy, and he points to studies showing these substances are found in people everywhere. This episode is not meant to alarm anyone. It is meant to educate and empower.Everyday Sources: Water, Heat, Food Storage, Fragrance and ClothingBoth doctors agree the goal is to reduce exposure where you can. Water bottles are one of the most common sources, and heat makes it worse. Bottles left in a hot car or in direct sunlight, hot drinks in plastic cups, and food reheated in plastic containers can all intensify absorption. Dr. Hatch also shares a lesson from a mentor about dish soaps and cups, and Dr. Brett points out that even some sparkling and mineral waters can contain forever chemicals that come from the source water, even when they are bottled in glass.Water quality matters just as much as the container. Dr. Brett shares what a water treatment expert told him: reverse osmosis is the gold standard, and a whole house system or a quality filter is a great place to start. Choose glass or stainless steel whenever possible, and remember that even glass dispensers can have plastic parts. Fragranced products, fabric softeners, dryer sheets, and some clothing are also hidden sources worth reviewing. Can You Test for PlasticsYes. Dr. Hatch explains that plastic testing is now available through integrative and medically oriented labs, and a local practitioner can help you find one. The reality, Dr. Brett notes, is that everyone who has been tested has some. Levels simply vary.Supporting the Body’s Natural Processes: Nrf2, Glutathione, Omega 3s and FiberBecause no one can avoid everything, the second half of the conversation focuses on supporting the body. Dr. Hatch explains that the Nrf2 pathway is one of the most important ways the body responds to inflammation and oxidative stress. Dr. Brett adds that this pathway helps the body make glutathione, often called the master antioxidant, and that sulforaphane from broccoli seed extract is one plant compound studied for activating it.Omega 3 fatty acids matter because plastics are fat soluble, so the right omegas help the body gather and move them out. Fiber is just as important. Dr. Hatch notes that most diets are so processed they lack the ...

  • Oxidative Stress | The Hidden Stress Shaping How We Age
    Oct 15 2026

Oxidative stress is one of the most talked about topics in health and wellness right now... but what does it actually mean? And what does the body already have built in to fight it? In this episode of Wellness Wednesday, Marilee sits down with Nikki, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Certified Wellness Coach with more than 25 years of experience in health, wellness, nutrition, disease prevention, and integrative care, for a conversation that goes straight to the root cause of how we age at the cellular level.

Nikki brings decades of clinical experience evaluating supplements, working in prevention and integrative care, and helping people understand the real impact of nutrigenomics on their health. Her passion for finding simple, science-backed solutions to complex health challenges led her to Nrf2 activation 15 years ago... and this conversation makes clear exactly why that discovery changed everything for her as a practitioner.

Together Marilee and Nikki unpack oxidative stress from the inside out. They explore how free radical damage accumulates across every organ system, why this is influencing more than 200 chronic conditions, and why the research on PubMed has grown from 86,000 to more than 415,000 published studies in just 15 years. Most importantly they dive into what the body already has built in to address it... and why activating that internal defense system is fundamentally different from anything people have tried before.

    In This Episode We Discuss:

    • What oxidative stress actually is and why Nikki describes it as “rusting from the inside out”
    • The connection between oxidative stress, inflammation, and chronic disease across every organ system
    • How nutrigenomics works and why we are not stuck with the genes we were given
    • The Nrf2 pathway and why it declines as we age, driving the changes we associate with getting older
    • The four key antioxidant enzymes activated by Nrf2 and the research-proven percentages behind each one
    • Why the body’s own antioxidants are more than a million times more powerful than anything we can supplement with from the outside
    • What Nikki discovered 15 years ago that changed the way she approaches her work as a dietitian

    Key Takeaways:

    • Oxidative stress is a root cause influencing more than 200 chronic diseases and it affects every organ system in the body
    • The Nrf2 pathway controls antioxidant production, detoxification, and the inflammatory response... and it declines significantly as we age
    • Research shows that activating the Nrf2 pathway can lower oxidative stress by an average of 40% in 30 days
    • SOD increases by 34%, catalase by 54%, Hemoxygenase 1 by 600 to 900%, and glutathione by 300% through Nrf2 activation
    • Self-care is cell care... starting at the cellular level with the foundational piece creates a platform everything else can build on

  • Is Your Nervous System Stuck in Overdrive?
    Oct 8 2026

Most people know stress is bad for their health — but few realize just how much of that damage happens through the nervous system. On this week’s Wellness Wednesday, Shauna sits down with Dr. Brett, a licensed chiropractor with over 30 years of experience in functional nutrition and functional medicine, for a powerful conversation about why regulating the nervous system may be the single most important thing anyone can do for their overall health.

Dr. Brett breaks down the difference between the two states of the nervous system — the sympathetic “fight, flight, or freeze” state and the parasympathetic “rest and digest” state — and explains why so many people today are unknowingly stuck in survival mode. From food sensitivities to sleep struggles to emotional patterns that won’t let go, so many symptoms trace back to a nervous system that has been dysregulated for far too long.

The good news? There are simple, powerful tools anyone can start using today to shift the nervous system back into balance. Shauna and Dr. Brett walk through two foundational techniques live on the call — and the results speak for themselves.

    In This Episode We Discuss:

    • What the autonomic nervous system is and why it controls so much more than most people realize
    • The difference between fight/flight/freeze and rest/digest — and how to tell which state the body is living in
    • How emotional stress, physical stressors, and environmental toxins all impact nervous system regulation
    • Two powerful daily techniques (box breathing and a hands-on stress-processing method) that anyone can do in under 5 minutes
    • The role of nutrition, sleep, chiropractic care, and intentional nervous system prep in long-term resilience

    Key Takeaways:

    • A dysregulated nervous system is at the root of many common symptoms — sleep trouble, reactivity, food sensitivities, brain fog, and chronic tension
    • Heart rate variability (HRV) is one of the most accessible objective tools to measure nervous system balance
    • Box breathing (4-5 seconds in, hold, out, hold) is the same technique Navy SEALs use to regulate under extreme stress
    • The body stores emotional stress physically — touching the point of tension while touching the forehead activates the vagus nerve and helps process and release it
    • Stress is not the enemy — the body’s ability to adapt to stress is the real indicator of health

The nervous system touches everything. Supporting it is not optional — it is foundational. Tune in and share this one with someone who needs it.
