Born in Landau in the heart of German wine country, Wissing built his career from the ground up, earning a law degree, a doctorate in administrative law, and real-world experience as both a judge and a public prosecutor before entering the political arena. As a longtime member of Germany's Free Democratic Party, he rose steadily through the ranks, serving on the Bundestag's Finance Committee for nearly a decade, leading the FDP in Rhineland-Palatinate, holding a state ministry that included viticulture, and eventually becoming the party's General Secretary. When the traffic light coalition brought the FDP into federal government in 2021, Wissing was appointed Federal Minister for Digital and Transport, a role that would place him at the center of some of Germany's most significant policy decisions, including the rapid closure of German airspace to Russian aircraft in the days following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
