Pope John Paul II had a special connection with the Virgin of Guadalupe, whom he referred to as "the Queen of Mexico and Empress of the Americas." In 1979, he made his first visit to Mexico, where he celebrated Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe and declared the Virgin of Guadalupe the "Star of the New Evangelization."
