Uptown Voices tells the stories of unsung heroes who are transforming New York City's Uptown neighborhoods from Washington Heights to Inwood to Harlem to the South Bronx. Each episode profiles an individual or organization making a positive difference. These social entrepreneurs, artists, and community leaders are navigating critical issues of affordability, public safety, and mental health. Through conversations rooted in journalistic integrity and genuine community ties, this podcast challenges negative narratives and celebrates the true spirit of the vibrant neighborhoods thriving north of Central Park. Each episode features extended interviews in which subjects tell their stories in their own words. The series examines the interconnected challenges facing Uptown communities—gentrification pressures, resource scarcity, systemic inequities—while simultaneously showcasing the creativity and collective power emerging in response. • Billionaires, Inflation, and Elections: Why Not Voting is Surrendering
    Oct 26 2026

Led Black and Octavio Blanco dive into a packed Sunday edition of Black and Blanco Live, covering everything from the start of NYC early voting to the intricacies of this year's ballot proposals. The hosts provide a step-by-step breakdown of the five NYC ballot measures—covering outdoor dining regulations, street safety projects, and the city's Rainy Day Fund—urging listeners to flip their ballots and make informed decisions at the polls.

The conversation tackles national politics head-on, addressing the rising cost of groceries, the billionaire class's influence on democracy, and the mainstream media's failure to adequately cover the MAGA movement. Led also addresses the recent viral controversy at Bo's Bagels in Harlem, defending local artist Tom Sanford against "blackface" accusations and criticizing social media clout-chasing over genuine community dialogue.

On the cultural front, the duo highlights the vibrant Uptown scene, including Lucha Libre at the People's Theater, Andrea Arroyo's "Dear Earth Love Uptown" exhibit, Figure Skating in Harlem's 30th-anniversary program, and a magical night of music at the Blue Note with Robert Glasper and Questlove. • The Untold Story of Uptown’s Film and Hip-Hop Pioneers and how they Captured the Hip-Hop Genius of Lin-Manuel Miranda
    Oct 23 2026

Welcome back to Uptown Voices! Octavio Blanco and Led Black are celebrating the podcast's massive debut on Pix11 with a powerhouse interview featuring two legends of the Uptown creative scene: Oscar Pena (Super O) and Jean Shepherd (Navigante), the visionary founders of the multicultural agency DOF NYC.

This episode is a masterclass in hustle, history, and community building. Oscar takes us back to the golden era of 90s Washington Heights hip-hop with his group Raw Cotics, detailing what it took to get on Stretch and Bobbito and collaborate with DJ Premier. Jean shares his own incredible artistic evolution, from creating electronic Latin music covered by Carlos Santana to becoming a top-tier cinematographer.

Together, they form a Latino-led director/producer duo that refuses to compromise on quality. They break down the secret to authentic cultural marketing (like how they sold out a struggling Romeo Santos concert in Houston), detail the making of their phenomenal documentary on the hip-hop roots of Hamilton (Spark Into a Flame), and share how they're transforming lives at George Washington High School through their Breakthrough Academy.

From creating the acclaimed Domi NYC music video to reshaping how corporate America sees Latino consumers, Oscar and Jean prove that no matter the budget or the obstacle, you must always strive for greatness.
