• Become a Performing-Arts ATHLETE! With Dr Emily Gee
    Apr 28 2026

I love highlighting the good things happening in the musician health world!

One of those things is happening on the campus of the University of Colorado at Boulder's College of Music.

A few weeks ago we met the embedded psychotherapist who is in the COM, Matthew Tomatz, LPC.

This week, we meet the director of the musician wellness program: Dr Emily Gee.

We talk about her personal experiences with injury as a cellist with thoracic outlet syndrome.

We talk about the processes she takes her students through to give them a holistic education in building their wellness strategies.

We talk about the fact that performing artists are indeed, ATHLETES,

    and much more!

    Keep on keepin' on!

  • The Biggest Mistakes Music Teachers Make with Injured Musicians
    Apr 21 2026

This week's episode is part 2/3 in our Injury Prevention for Music Educators series.

And like most content creators and thought leaders these days...I made an acronym for it to help you remember.

Nope, it's not the 3 C's of Injury Prevention (sound familiar?)

It is just a bit of sage advice from yours truly:

    Don't be a SAP!

    What is a SAP?

Someone whose reactions to injury in their music student cause them to feel SHAME, who ASSUME, and who PROJECT

There is a lot to unpack with those three topics, but the TLDR is this:

Your musicians are humans first, and musicians second.

  • Everything is WORKABLE! With Matthew Tomatz, LPC
    Apr 14 2026

I got to know Matt a few months back when I found out what CU Boulder has going on in its music department.

Some schools have a downloadable pdf about musician wellness.

Well, CU Boulder College of Music has a whole DEPARTMENT for it!

In today's episode, I sit down with the embedded psychotherapist in that department, Matthew Tomatz

    It was an AWESOME conversation!

He shares his thoughts on the different types of injuries and how healing looks different for all of them

How healing is RARELY linear. It is often cyclical!

How our body whispers before it screams, and why it is so HARD to listen to those whispers until it's too late.

    And so much more!

    Keep on keepin' on!

  • This is What Pianists Get WRONG About Healthy Technique - With Penelope Roskell
    Mar 17 2026

First of all, I apologize to Ms. Roskell for mispronouncing her last name on the recording (it is pronounced RAWSKell)!! I meant no disrespect and I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation!

Because she REALLY knows her stuff!

She literally wrote the book on it!

She is not only a professor at Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London,

Or the President-Elect of the European Piano Teachers Association

But wrote the book The Complete Pianist and the Essential Piano Techniques Book series as well!

We talked about what it means to truly warm up at the piano

About how a performance injury led her to re-examine every aspect of how she played the piano

And how even with learning the physiology of playing the piano, the ultimate purpose is to be able to access our musical artistry at a higher level.

Keep on keepin' on, and enjoy this episode!
