The veil that protects the forest is torn, and tonight Ciera has gathered every kind of life in the wood to help mend it.

This song is the ritual itself. Our witch begins by drawing a circle of silver with her athame, breaking her own old promise that this wood never needs a circle of protection. Then she calls the four corners by name: Sairys of the Air, Fafnin of the Fire, Naelyan of the Water, and Grael of the Earth. Each dragon is anchored by one of her three protection stones: red jasper, black obsidian, and green serpentine.

Fox, hare, owl, wolf, bear, snake, toad, and moth step forward and breathe into the chalice. The great trees bow and add their breath too. Last, Ciera offers a whispered name she rarely speaks aloud. Every breath becomes a silver thread, and she stitches them into the torn veil with a rhyming spell.

The song builds from a hushed, breathy opening into an epic crescendo of distorted guitars, choir, and thunderous toms. The cello, which has come to mean the dragons’ presence, roars through the climax. It then drops into a quiet ending in which Ciara thanks the dragons, the animals, and the trees, and sends them home.

Did the ritual work? That’s a question for another day.
