It’s just after four o’clock in the morning.

Ken Monger is awake and making his way downstairs towards the kitchen.

But when he reaches the door, something is wrong.

The kitchen has been completely turned upside down.

And this would be far from the last strange event to trouble the Monger family.

In 1980, Ken and Jenny Monger temporarily moved into a council house in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, while their usual home was being modernised.

Almost immediately, unexplained things began to happen.

Objects moved. Strange noises were heard. The family experienced disturbances they simply couldn’t explain.

And before long, whatever was responsible had been given a name:

Barney.
