A woman came to Jesus for help. He called her a dog (Matthew 15: 21-28). Why? How would you feel if you were called a dog? How would you feel if Jesus Himself called you a dog? Disgusted, angry, hurt, humiliated—those are the words that quickly come to mind. Why did Jesus use such a term? This is sexist, offensive, and even bordering on harassment. Today, He might well have been reported for such a statement. Even in that time, it was insulting and offensive. Jews and Gentiles kept their distance; Jews often referred to Gentiles as dogs. Yet in this moment, the woman refuses to be turned away. Despite the sting of rejection, she persists with remarkable determination: ‘Even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the master’s table,’ she replies. She will not let go. Jesus sees her sincerity, her humility, and her faith. He knows she believes in Him, for if she didn’t, she would have walked away. But she doesn’t. She stays and He heals her. He sees your determination too.
