The ninety-second hatch that cost them the cabin's only escape
In this episode, we follow the last eighty-four seconds inside a Command Module on the ground as a sudden electrical anomaly becomes an expanding fire. What did the crew do in those frantic seconds, and how did one small specification - a ninety-second hatch - shape everything that followed?
Date: January 27, 1967
Location: Launch Complex 34, Cape Kennedy
Event: Plugs-out countdown demonstration
Person: Roger Chaffee
Status: Sealed command module; pure-oxygen atmosphere
- The crew sealed themselves inside the Command Module for a routine ground test called a plugs-out countdown demonstration.
- Instruments recorded a power surge at 23:30:55 GMT, with the first human voice nine seconds later.
- The cabin used a slightly above-atmospheric pure-oxygen environment during the test.
- The hatch required a minimum of ninety seconds to open from the inside under normal conditions, a documented specification.
- Seventy-two more seconds passed after the first voice before the interior wall burst outward, during which three men attempted every trained procedure.
