The marigold pushed through the shoe and left a trail
In this episode, we walk through the discovery at St. Anselm’s rectory and the chain of mundane actions and odd silences that followed, from the contractor’s photograph to a housekeeper’s delay and a riverman’s morning find. How did a fresh flower appear in a sealed room, and how did the other shoe end up downstream?
Person: Marcia Cox
Person: Ray Ochoa
Person: Father Dennis Moran
Date: July 14-15, 1991
Location: St. Anselm’s rectory, Dellwood
- At 11:20 a.m. on July 14, 1991, Ray Ochoa’s renovation crew broke through plaster into a sealed nine-by-eleven-foot room with a centered wooden chair.
- On the chair sat a left-foot women’s leather shoe, size six, with a fresh marigold placed stem-down inside; one photograph was taken before the flower vanished.
- Ochoa’s crew signed out at 5:45 p.m.; Marcia Cox found the basement door open at 6:30 p.m., resecured it, and waited two days before telling Father Moran.
- At 4:50 a.m. on July 15, 1991, Stanley Pruitt found a right-foot women’s size six leather shoe snagged on his trotline in the Crale River, about 400 yards from the rectory.
- The sealed room’s south wall displayed 41 hand-ruled calendar pages for 1962 with every date crossed out except August 17, and the diocese’s full records on the space would remain buried for years.
