Being misunderstood is deeply hurtful. Jesus knew that intimately. In what scholars call the Caesarea Philippi Declaration, Jesus starts to talk about the fact that he is going to suffer and die, and the disciples don't like it one bit.
The people of the time were expecting a messiah who would liberate them from the tyranny of Rome. What do we want a messiah to be for us today? Who do we say Jesus is?
This is a sermon I preached at St Martin's Community Church in Melbourne on 23 August 2026. It's based on the Gospel reading for the day, which was Matthew 16:13-20.
