One of the driving forces behind the Pax Silica initiative is the geopolitical race to be the dominant player in the set of technologies lumped under “AI. In this episode featuring Wonder Facilitator Tony La Viña in an intergenerational conversation with our field guide, physicist, and Chairperson Emeritus of AGHAM (Advocates of Science and Technology for the People) Dr. Gani Tapang, and our explorer, indigenous activist, and human rights defender Funa-ay Claver, we asked the following questions as our North Star:

In the face of the climate crisis, what are responsible ways to respond to the global race to build AI infrastructure?

How can the Philippines develop through science and technology in a way that is pro-people and ecologically responsible?

How can we prevent international agreements like Pax Silica from continuing the history of resource imperialism that has ravaged our country?

Trigger warning: this episode includes a short mention of torture and violence

What really happened during the Martial Law era? Ano nga ba ang nangyari noong panahon ng Batas Militar? What lasting scars did the Martial Law era leave on Philippine society? How do we deal with efforts to wash away the bloody history of Martial Law?

Given these questions as our North Star, our discussion with Eddie Quitoriano – former commander in the New People’s Army and writer of the memoir, Deeper Ground, Darker Shadows: The Making of a Mindanao Rebel, now an independent consultant for conflict resolution and security – comes out today on the 54th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law in the Philippines. How has Philippine society been since? What remains of Marcos Sr. and various dynasties’ political projects, and what can we contribute to the intergenerational task of nation-building?

Thank you once again to our guest for lovingly navigating these questions with us.

  • Defending history: from Ninoy through EDSA to the present with Ging Deles and Kiko Aquino Dee
    Aug 21 2026

Watch the video premiere on YouTube

On August 21, 1983, Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., a staunch critic of the Marcos regime, was assassinated on the tarmac of what was then called the Manila International Airport. According to the Martial Law Museum, “Ninoy’s death ignited a fire among the opposition.” Less than 3 years after Ninoy’s assassination, the Filipino people went to the streets in a non-violent mass protest called the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution and ended the two-decade Marcos dictatorship.

Here are some of the things that happened between then and now: Cory Aquino became president, and then 18 years after that her son Noynoy Aquino got elected; Martial Law victims received some reparations and billions of the Marcos’ ill-gotten wealth were recovered; however, in 2022 Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., son of the ousted dictator, got elected to the presidency and returned to Malacañang. And even before that, the Philippines was ravaged by Rodrigo Duterte’s violent “War on Drugs.”

Given this context, our North Star for this wayfinding mission will be these questions:

    1. Given the Marcoses' return to power, how do we reevaluate EDSA and the aftermath of Ninoy’s assassination?
    2. How do we preserve the memories of the victims of Martial Law despite the efforts of some towards historical revisionism?
    3. What should we learn from the people who helped topple the Marcos dictatorship, and how can we treat the project of building a more just and free society as an intergenerational responsibility?

Thank you once again to our guests for lovingly navigating these questions with us.

  • Truth and consequence: fighting disinformation while protecting free speech with Jonathan Ong and Yuki Abion

Mananaig ang katotohanan. This call is more important now than ever. Thanks to the internet and social media, nefarious actors have found it easier to undertake massive disinformation campaigns. This adds to the fact that billionaire-controlled algorithms often let misinformation spread like a virus, beating the pace and reach of the fastest fact-checkers. To top it all, the rise of AI slop and deepfakes has made the work of fighting misinformation even harder.

But as important as it is to fight falsehoods and “fake news,” this impetus can be abused to muzzle good and honest journalism and curtail free speech.

Ito ang ikinakabahala ng marami tungkol sa isinusulong na “Anti-disinformation Bill” sa Kamara at Senado. The versions of the bill pose serious threats, such as criminalizing speech or even reporting deemed politically inconvenient.

In our wayfinding today, our North Star will be these curiosities:

    • Who should be held accountable for the spread of disinformation in the age of social media and generative AI? Sino ang dapat managot?
    • What are actually effective ways to fight disinformation?
    • How do free speech and freedom of the press help protect our other rights?

Thank you once again to our guests from Sigla Research Center for lovingly navigating these questions with us.
