  • Four Languages. Forty Countries. One Global Calling.
    Aug 20 2026

In this episode of The Whigham School Podcast, founder Steve Whigham and Dr. Jeremy Patterson discuss one of the most intentional parts of the Palm Scholar experience: language learning.

The Whigham School’s Palm Scholar Master’s in Global Studies is designed around immersive international residencies across six regions of the world and more than 40 countries. As students move through the program, they develop language skills in French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, and Arabic, building a foundation for deeper cultural understanding, global leadership, and meaningful engagement across communities.

Steve and Jeremy explain why these four languages were chosen. The goal is not simply to add language courses to a graduate program. The goal is to help students communicate with more people, understand cultural nuance, and become more flexible, capable, and respectful global leaders.

Jeremy also explores the complexity behind language selection. French, Spanish, English, Mandarin, and Arabic each carry different histories, cultural variations, regional identities, and global realities. The conversation touches on post-colonial history, dialects, mutual intelligibility, and the fact that language can never be separated from culture.

Steve emphasizes that the purpose of language learning at The Whigham School is tied to the school’s larger mission: preparing students to do substantial good in the world. Language becomes more than a skill. It becomes a way to unlock culture, build trust, understand people more deeply, and prepare for work in multinational organizations, NGOs, journalism, diplomacy, business, and global service.

By the end of this episode, listeners will understand why The Whigham School does not treat language as an academic extra. It is central to the formation of globally prepared, interculturally wise leaders.

  • Do Substantial Good
    Jul 30 2026

What does it really mean to do substantial good in the world?

In this episode of the Whigham School Podcast, Steve Whigham, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of The Whigham School, joins Dr. Jeremy Patterson, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Senior Interculturalist, for a thoughtful conversation on the mission driving The Whigham School: preparing global leaders to do substantial good in the world.

Together, Steve and Jeremy unpack the difference between simply “doing good” and creating substantial, sustainable, net-positive impact for the people and communities being served. They explore why leadership must move beyond self-interest, status, and personal achievement — and instead be rooted in generosity, humility, moral clarity, cultural understanding, and a sincere desire to leave people, communities, and systems better than we found them.

The conversation also reflects on the role of higher education in shaping future leaders. Rather than preparing students only for personal success, The Whigham School seeks to initiate leaders who seek to understand and engage in the real world and who intend to use their skills, influence, and opportunities to benefit others.

This episode is a foundational conversation for anyone interested in global leadership, ethical decision-making, intercultural education, service-driven leadership, and the future of higher education.
