The Way It Came by Henry James is an atmospheric psychological ghost story about coincidence, jealousy, obsession, and the mysterious possibility of communication beyond death. First published in 1896, the story was later revised and retitled *The Friends of the Friends*.
An unnamed narrator becomes fascinated by two of her friends—a man and a woman—who have each experienced a strangely similar supernatural event involving the appearance of a parent at the moment of death. Although both are intrigued by the coincidence and repeatedly express a desire to meet, circumstances continually prevent their introduction.
When the narrator becomes engaged to the man, curiosity gradually turns into jealousy. She begins to fear that the two strangers may share a connection deeper than anything she can understand or control. After the woman’s sudden death, an extraordinary encounter raises unsettling questions about whether the pair finally met through supernatural means.
Henry James deliberately leaves much of the mystery unresolved, allowing psychological suspicion and supernatural possibility to exist side by side.
This audiobook is an excellent choice for listeners who enjoy Henry James, classic ghost stories, Victorian supernatural fiction, psychological mysteries, ambiguous hauntings, and literary tales of jealousy and obsession.
