  • SURVIVAL FIRST AID: The Complete Audiobook
    Oct 16 2026
When an emergency happens, the first person on the scene may be the only help available. What you do in those first critical minutes matters.A serious accident on a remote highway. A deep wound miles from medical assistance. A family member who suddenly collapses. A hiking companion showing signs of heat stroke. A disaster that leaves you without reliable communications or immediate access to emergency services. In these moments, survival depends on more than having a first-aid kit. It depends on recognizing what matters, knowing what to do, and having the confidence to act.SURVIVAL FIRST AID is a practical, field-oriented guide to emergency medical preparedness, written for ordinary people who may find themselves responsible for another person’s safety when professional help is delayed.Drawing on decades of military service, rescue operations, protective work, emergency training, and international humanitarian missions, David Burnell brings a disciplined, real-world perspective to expedient emergency care. This is not a medical textbook filled with unnecessary complexity. It is a straightforward handbook built around one essential principle:Find what can kill first. Do what preserves life. Keep the person alive until help arrives.WHAT YOU WILL LEARN* The First Sixty Seconds: How to assess danger, recognize life-threatening conditions, call for help, and establish immediate priorities.* Severe Bleeding and Trauma: Using direct pressure, commercial tourniquets, and appropriate bleeding-control techniques to address dangerous blood loss.* CPR, AEDs, and Choking: Recognizing cardiac arrest, responding to airway emergencies, and understanding essential adult, child, and infant lifesaving procedures.* Shock and Internal Injuries: Identifying the warning signs of serious conditions that may not be immediately visible.* Fractures and Improvised Splints: Stabilizing injured limbs with commercial supplies or practical materials available in the field.* Wounds, Burns, and Infection: Clean and protect injuries, recognize complications, and know when professional medical treatment is essential.* Medical Emergencies: Recognizing possible heart attacks, strokes, severe allergic reactions, seizures, diabetic emergencies, poisoning, and overdose.* Environmental Survival: Responding to heat stroke, hypothermia, frostbite, cold-water emergencies, dehydration, bites, and stings.* Expedient First Aid: Improvising responsibly when conventional medical supplies are unavailable, without attempting dangerous procedures beyond your training.* Emergency Evacuation: Making sound decisions when ambulances cannot reach you, communications fail, or rescue is delayed.MORE THAN A FIRST-AID MANUALThe book also provides practical field-reference materials designed to support emergency preparedness, including:* Quick-action emergency response cards* Vehicle and go-bag medical kit inventories* Patient observation and emergency handoff records* Common first-aid mistakes and dangerous practices to avoid* Realistic emergency scenarios for practicing decision-making* Guidance for organizing supplies, communicating with rescuers, and managing the first hour after an injuryWhether you keep it in your vehicle, emergency preparedness kit, backpack, workplace, or home, this guide helps you prepare before an emergency and make better decisions when one occurs.WRITTEN FROM A LIFETIME OF EXPERIENCEDavid Burnell is a decorated U.S. Air Force veteran, rescue instructor, humanitarian, and founder of the Urban Warfare Center. His experience spans military service, rescue training, protective operations, and humanitarian response missions in challenging environments around the world.Throughout his career, one lesson has remained constant: Preparedness is not about carrying the most equipment. It is about knowing what matters and being ready to act when someone needs you.SURVIVAL FIRST AID reflects that philosophy. It emphasizes calm decision-making, practical skills, responsible improvisation, and the fact that effective first aid often comes down to doing a few important things exceptionally well.BE READY BEFORE SOMEONE NEEDS YOU.You may never know when an ordinary day will become an emergency. You may be the first to arrive, the only one with supplies, or the one who must make decisions while everyone else looks for help. You do not have to be a medical professional to prepare for that responsibility. You do need the right knowledge, appropriate training, and a willingness to act.SURVIVAL FIRST AID is a practical addition to every vehicle emergency kit, go bag, outdoor survival pack, and preparedness library. When help is minutes—or hours—away, your first response begins with you. This handbook is an educational first-aid reference and does not replace professional emergency medical care, certified hands-on training, or guidance from emergency dispatchers. • SWITCH ON: The Stories That Stay
    Oct 14 2026

Some moments you have to act—and some moments you have to stop. Both require control.

During an intensive hostage rescue training program in England in the 1980s, David Burnell learned what it meant to commit fully when the signal came. Months of demanding exercises required attention, preparation, and the ability to move from readiness into purposeful action. But one of the most lasting lessons came when a participant continued fighting after the exercise had ended. A blank discharged toward Burnell’s face. Another student intervened and was injured protecting him.

The participant knew how to switch on. He failed to switch off.

That experience anchors this short, direct exploration of a quality elite operators must have: the ability to bring focused effort to a necessary task while staying responsive to changing conditions.

Drawing on that training and ten years developing the Urban Warfare Center, Burnell examines what switching on looks like physically, emotionally, and mentally. In plain language, he explores how stress affects attention and judgment, why determination cannot replace skill, and how training can prepare someone to act without surrendering control.

Switching on begins before physical action. It means bringing your attention fully to the environment, noticing sensory information, and taking a feeling of danger seriously enough to assess it. When action becomes necessary, readiness must become commitment. When the need changes, the response must change with it.

Through a continuous narrative, practical examples, and clear decision diagrams, Switch On considers how this principle applies to military personnel, law enforcement officers, and civilians facing a physical assault. Each has different responsibilities, abilities, and choices. The question remains: What does this situation require from me now?

The book also explores how to practice recognition, communication, commitment, and stopping—and why you may need to stop an action while your heart is still pounding and your emotions are still intense.

Grounded in lived experience and supported by carefully explained research, Switch On offers a focused look at readiness, decisive action, and the discipline to stop when the work changes.

  • THE QUIET WAR: The Complete Audiobook
    Oct 10 2026
Not every war is fought on a battlefield. Some are fought behind locked doors, inside classified communications centers, along distant borders, and in the quiet hours when a soldier waits for orders that may change everything. Others are fought much closer to home, in the hearts of families who endure the separations, uncertainties, and invisible wounds of military service. The Quiet War is the true story of David Burnell’s ten years in the United States Air Force, from 1984 to 1994, during the final, volatile decade of the Cold War and the opening of a new era of global conflict. This deeply personal military memoir explores duty, secrecy, sacrifice, leadership, and the unseen human cost of serving a nation in a world that never looked as peaceful as it seemed.Burnell joined the Air Force dreaming of becoming a Pararescueman, one of the military’s elite rescue specialists. Instead, circumstances led him into Communications Operations, a highly specialized profession that maintains the secure flow of information on which military commanders and operational forces depend. What initially seemed like a detour became an extraordinary journey through intelligence organizations, tactical air control centers, rapid-deployment units, and classified operational environments where precision, trust, and readiness were essential. From the intelligence corridors of Bergstrom Air Force Base in Texas to military operations along the Honduran-Nicaraguan border, Burnell experienced the Cold War from a perspective rarely explored in traditional military histories. He witnessed the consequences of dangerous operations, confronted the possibility of taking a human life, and learned that the responsibilities of military service extended far beyond the duties listed in an official job description. His assignments eventually took him to RAF Sculthorpe in England, where years of sustained alert duty, sensitive communications operations, and support for special operations training exposed him to another side of military life. There were moments of extraordinary achievement and camaraderie, but also tragedy, psychological strain, and difficult lessons about the limits of human endurance. Through dangerous training exercises, aircraft accidents, the threat of terrorism, and the constant demands of operational readiness, he discovered that some of the most lasting injuries of service leave no visible scars. The book also tells the stories of those who served alongside him: fellow Airmen whose courage was tested in unexpected ways, a close friend who fought through devastating injuries, and military professionals whose quiet determination shaped Burnell’s understanding of honor and leadership. His years on the military Honor Guard, during which he participated in more than one hundred burial ceremonies, brought him face-to-face with the ultimate cost of service and the families left to carry it.Yet some of his most painful memories were not born in dangerous operational environments. They came from the distance between duty and family. A young daughter pointing to her father’s photograph and asking where he was. A wife raising children through long periods of absence. An infant son’s blanket held close during the lonely months of the Gulf War buildup. A videotape from home that became too painful to finish watching. These deeply personal experiences reveal the sacrifices that military records, medals, and official histories seldom capture. As the Berlin Wall opened and the world celebrated the apparent end of the Cold War, Burnell witnessed history changing around him. But the dangers did not disappear. The invasion of Kuwait and Operation Desert Storm brought new responsibilities, new uncertainties, and another painful separation from his family.Throughout his career, Burnell’s commitment to excellence and leadership earned significant recognition, including the Meritorious Service Medal and the prestigious John Levitow Award. Yet the honors that marked his achievements could never fully explain the experiences that shaped the man behind the uniform. His final assignment at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota brought an unexpected turning point. While still on active duty, he joined the Pennington County Search and Rescue Team. The dream of saving lives that first drew him to Pararescue had never truly disappeared. It had simply been waiting for another opportunity to emerge. The Quiet War is more than a chronicle of military assignments or historical events. It is an intimate account of what sustained readiness does to the human spirit, what leadership demands when nobody is watching, and what families surrender in the service of something larger than themselves.Written by a veteran who has spent decades reflecting on the meaning of service, this memoir honors the men and women whose contributions remained largely unseen, whose sacrifices were seldom publicly acknowledged, and whose personal battles often continued ...

  • Self-Defense: The Complete Audiobook
    Oct 10 2026

Self-Defense: Mastering Urban Survival Techniques — Second Edition is a practical guide to personal safety built around one central principle: don't win a fight. The goal is to go home.

Self-defense is often presented as a collection of strikes, holds, counters, and fighting techniques. David Burnell takes a broader and more realistic approach. Effective self-defense begins long before physical contact. It starts with awareness, judgment, preparation, communication, and the ability to recognize when a situation is changing before it becomes a crisis.

Drawing on decades of experience in military service, personal protection, rescue, emergency preparedness, combatives, and instruction through the Urban Warfare Center, Burnell explains how civilians can build a layered approach to safety without living in fear. Readers learn to recognize risk, set boundaries, de-escalate when appropriate, create distance, use barriers, make decisions under pressure, and escape when an opportunity exists.

When violence cannot be avoided, the book focuses on practical survival rather than complicated technique. It addresses close-contact assaults, grabs, chokes, ground survival, weapons, multiple attackers, confined spaces, and the realities of unequal strength. The emphasis throughout is on protecting yourself long enough to create an opening, disengage, and reach safety.

This revised and updated Second Edition also expands the discussion beyond physical confrontation. It covers home and vehicle safety, parking areas, public transportation, rideshare travel, workplaces, schools, churches, public gatherings, active violence, severe bleeding, scenario training, the legal principles surrounding defensive force, and the critical decisions that come after an incident.

Burnell also challenges some of the most persistent assumptions in self-defense training. Size and strength do matter. Weapon disarms are not tricks. Pain does not always stop a determined attacker. Confidence is not the same as competence. And no technique can eliminate uncertainty. Real preparation comes from understanding your limitations, training honestly, and improving your ability to adapt when events do not unfold as expected.

Medical readiness is also treated as part of self-defense. The book encourages recognized training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, automated external defibrillator use, and ACS Stop the Bleed because surviving the confrontation may only be the beginning. Protecting life means knowing what to do when someone is seriously injured, and professional help hasn't arrived yet.

Throughout the book, the focus remains on civilian responsibility. This is not military doctrine repackaged for ordinary life. Civilians don't need to clear rooms, chase attackers, or hold ground out of pride. They need to recognize danger, make sound decisions, protect the people legitimately in their care, and get to safety.

Self-Defense: Mastering Urban Survival Techniques is for readers who want practical capability without paranoia, confidence without recklessness, and preparation grounded in reality rather than fantasy.

Prepare carefully. Recognize danger early. Protect life. Create safety. Go home.

  • TEANCUM - A True Friend to Liberty
    Oct 9 2026
Some men's names survive because they conquered nations. Others are remembered for building empires, commanding armies, or changing the course of history. But another kind of man is measured differently. His greatness lies in what he was willing to defend, the people who trusted him, the hardships he endured, and the sacrifices he made so others could live in peace. These are often the men whose stories speak most powerfully to those who understand the weight of responsibility, because their lives were not defined simply by the victories they achieved, but by the people they served and the convictions they refused to abandon.Welcome to Echo Valor with David Burnell, where we explore stories of courage, sacrifice, brotherhood, resilience, faith, and the extraordinary character of those who step forward when others need them most. For those unfamiliar with the Book of Mormon, it is a volume of sacred scripture that members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints study alongside the Bible. It tells of ancient peoples and civilizations in the Americas, their struggles, wars, faith in God, and relationship with Jesus Christ. Like the Bible, it contains accounts of prophets, leaders, families, and ordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances. At its heart, the Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ, and within its pages are remarkable stories of courage, sacrifice, faith, and the enduring struggle between freedom and oppression. One of those stories is the life of a warrior named Teancum.Today, I want to share a story that I have wanted to tell for a very long time. The Book of Mormon has been part of my life for as long as I can remember, and among its many accounts of faith, courage, sacrifice, and conflict, one man's story has always commanded my attention. His name was Teancum. Many people may not know the name Teancum. Even among those who know the Book of Mormon well, he sometimes stands in Captain Moroni's shadow, one of the most celebrated military leaders in scripture. But the more closely I study Teancum, the more remarkable his story becomes. I see a man whose military skill matched his determination, whose loyalty was proven over years of service, and whose heart carried the weight of a nation fighting for survival. I also see a man who reminds us that extraordinary courage does not make someone immune to the burden of anger, exhaustion, or grief.Teancum’s story resonates with me because of the men I have known throughout my life, especially those who served in the military, worked in dangerous professions, or carried responsibilities that could put them between innocent people and harm. Some of the strongest people I have known were not the loudest. They were not looking for recognition. They were simply the ones you could count on when circumstances became difficult. They understood that loyalty was more than a word, leadership was more than a position, and courage was more than the absence of fear. That is the kind of man I think about when I read about Teancum. Not simply a warrior carrying a weapon, but a man carrying responsibility. A man whose life was consumed by defending his people and whose service demanded far more than physical courage. It demanded judgment, discipline, endurance, loyalty, and the willingness to keep going when the cost of continuing became almost unbearable. To appreciate the man, we must understand something about the world in which he lived. According to the chronology preserved in the Book of Mormon, Teancum served in the first century before the birth of Jesus Christ, during a time of tremendous conflict among the Nephite people. Their nation faced powerful enemies along its borders and dangerous divisions within its own society. Ambitious men sought political power, communities turned against one another, and armies threatened cities where ordinary families were trying to live in peace. The Nephites had established a government of judges after moving away from monarchy. They valued self-governance, religious conviction, and the protection of their homes and families. But individuals constantly challenged those liberties by seeking to rule through coercion, rebellion, or conquest. The danger was not always beyond the nation’s borders, because some of its most determined enemies had once been Nephites themselves. For Teancum, these were not distant political arguments. They were the realities that would define much of his recorded life, and his nation's struggles would eventually become his own.The Book of Mormon tells us almost nothing about Teancum’s early years. We do not know where he was born, who his parents were, whether he was married, or whether children waited for him at home. We are not told what training prepared him for military leadership, what he looked like, or how he first came to command soldiers. The record does not preserve his private prayers, his personal testimony, or the conversations he may have had with ...

  • We Will Come for You: The Rescue of Dude 44 During the 2026 Iran War
    Oct 7 2026
I’m David Burnell, and this is Echo Valor. Stories of courage, service, resilience, and faith. Let’s get started. Before a rescue helicopter reaches a downed airman, another fight is already underway. A wounded man has to stay alive. He has to make decisions through pain, exhaustion, and uncertainty while the people searching for him intend to capture him. Beyond his sight, others are working to find him, protect him, and bring him home.In early April 2026, that fight unfolded during the war involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. The conflict had begun on February twenty-eighth with U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran. By the time the rescue took place, the war was in its sixth week.On April third, an American F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down over southwestern Iran. Its pilot and weapons systems officer ejected into hostile territory. Both survived, but it took two separate rescue operations to reach them. The pilot was recovered first. The injured weapons systems officer remained behind, evading capture while American military and intelligence personnel worked to locate him. This episode is called “We Will Come for You.” It is the story of the rescue of Dude 44, the aircraft’s call sign, and the preparation, endurance, and collective effort that brought its crew home. This account draws on public reporting and the April sixth briefing by American military and intelligence leaders. Some details remain undisclosed, but the public account reveals an extraordinary connection between a survivor’s determination and the people working to reach him. After the crew ejected, their mission changed immediately. Their aircraft could no longer carry them to safety. They had to survive on the ground, avoid capture, establish contact, and make recovery possible.General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the Joint Personnel Recovery Center declared the emergency early that morning in Iran. After confirming active rescue beacons, American forces launched the recovery effort. In the public account, the pilot was identified as Dude 44 Alpha. The weapons systems officer was Dude 44 Bravo. The preparation for those hours had begun long before the aircraft went down.At Fairchild Air Force Base in Washington, the Air Force’s survival school prepares personnel for isolation and possible capture. The familiar acronym is SERE: survival, evasion, resistance, and escape.Survival means keeping yourself alive when the environment offers little support. Evasion means avoiding capture while working toward recovery. Resistance prepares personnel to uphold their obligations if captured. Escape addresses the possibility of getting out of captivity when circumstances permit.Air Force SERE specialists prepare aircrews and others whose duties place them at risk of isolation. Their work includes survival equipment, communication, signaling, concealment, and support to personnel recovery. The instructors undergo specialized training themselves before taking on the responsibility of preparing others. There is a practical reason to rehearse these skills before an emergency. Under stress, unfamiliar tasks compete for attention. Equipment that seemed simple in a classroom can become difficult to use when your hands are shaking, visibility is poor, or an injury limits movement. Practice gives you something dependable to return to.The individual training records of these two airmen are not part of this public account. We cannot say which exercise they remembered or which instructor’s lesson came back to them. We can recognize that surviving isolation and making recovery possible are precisely what this preparation is intended to support. To me, preparation is a responsibility we carry toward ourselves and the people who may someday have to help us. Every useful decision a survivor makes can improve the rescue force’s opportunity to reach him.The people coming for these airmen had their own years of preparation behind them.Air Force pararescuemen, commonly called PJs, train for both recovery and medicine. Their preparation includes demanding physical training, diving, parachuting, survival skills, emergency medical education, and specialized rescue training. The Air Force’s published pipeline includes a thirty-nine-week medical phase and a twenty-two-week pararescue apprentice phase, alongside the other schools. Qualification is followed by continued training with an operational team. That investment matters because a rescuer must be able to treat an injured person in circumstances where reaching the patient may be as difficult as providing the care.Combat rescue officers help lead recovery operations. Helicopter crews work with the rescuers and supporting aircraft. Each element has to understand its responsibility and how it connects with everyone else.Consider the repetition behind that capability. A pilot practices an emergency procedure. A medic rehearses an intervention. A team works through ...

  • Improvised Weapons: The Complete Audiobook
    Sep 26 2026

    Revised Second Edition

Improvised Weapons: Using Everyday Objects for Emergency Self-Defense is a practical guide to awareness, adaptability, and personal safety when situations change faster than expected.

Drawing from decades of military service, self-defense instruction, personal protection, rescue work, and real-world training, David Burnell explains how ordinary environments already contain tools that can help you create distance, establish barriers, protect others, and get to safety. The emphasis is not on aggression or complicated techniques. It is on recognizing what is available, understanding what the situation requires, and making simple decisions that still work under stress.

Throughout the audiobook, Burnell examines the defensive value of everyday items such as flashlights, backpacks, umbrellas, water bottles, furniture, doors, vehicles, keys, and other common objects. More importantly, he shows how awareness, positioning, movement, escape routes, and environmental barriers can matter far more than the object in your hand.

Listeners will learn how stress affects perception and decision-making, how to recognize danger earlier, how to create space without unnecessarily escalating a confrontation, how to protect family members and others, and how to train with simple, realistic drills designed around movement and judgment rather than choreography.

This is not a manual for manufacturing weapons or looking for a fight. It is a civilian preparedness book built around a different goal: avoid danger when you can, leave when you can, create distance when you can, put something between yourself and the threat when you can, and use force only when no safer option remains.

The object is not the skill. The skill is recognition.

Prepare early. Stay aware. Protect what matters. Get home safely.

  • The Beggar: The Complete Audiobook
    Sep 21 2026

During a 2012 humanitarian mission among the Karen people of Burma, I met an elderly beggar whose body had been bent by age, poverty, and war. He owned almost nothing, yet through his quiet dignity and a simple, unexpected gift, he taught me something I had not fully understood: grace is not only something we give. It is also something we must be humble enough to receive.

The Beggar is a deeply personal Christian reflection on poverty, dignity, mercy, judgment, and our shared dependence upon Jesus Christ. Through the story of one man and the lessons that continued to unfold long after I left Burma, this book asks us to reconsider what it means to possess something, to serve another person, and to recognize the gifts of God in our own lives.

This post contains the complete audiobook of The Beggar: What One Man in Burma Taught Me About the Grace of Jesus Christ, written by David Burnell.
