What if you could order sunlight the way you order an Uber? Reflect Orbital wants to do exactly that, using giant mirrors in orbit to steer sunlight to specific places on Earth. The startup has now won US approval for its first demonstration satellite, with a long-term vision of up to 50,000 orbital mirrors delivering “sunlight on demand.”

In this video, I explain how Reflect Orbital’s space mirrors would work, who would pay for them, what the FCC actually approved, and why astronomers are warning about what this could mean for the night sky.
