The Silence You Learned To Keep is the fifth Sourel in October’s theme, What Was Never Yours.
This episode turns gently towards the silence a woman may have learned to carry. Not the peaceful silence that restores her. Not the sacred silence that lets the soul breathe. But the silence that came from fear, shame, protection, or the quiet knowing that speaking might not be safe.
The Silence You Learned To Keep is for the woman who learned not to say too much, not to ask for too much, not to make others uncomfortable, and not to tell the truth if it changed the atmosphere around her.
This Sourel explores how silence can become a hiding place for shame. It may have protected her in rooms where her truth was too much for others, or where speaking risked being dismissed, blamed, punished or misunderstood.
This reflection does not judge the silence. It thanks the part that learned it. It asks gently: what has this silence been holding?
Maybe grief. Maybe anger. Maybe a boundary. Maybe a memory. Maybe a need. Maybe the simple truth: that hurt me. That mattered. I was not okay. I needed someone to notice.
The Silence You Learned To Keep reminds us that there is a difference between privacy and hiding. Privacy can feel sacred. Hiding often feels lonely. Privacy protects what is precious. Hiding protects against shame.
This Sourel opens a quiet doorway inside, where truth can return slowly, safely and at the body’s own pace.
Your truth does not have to be told to everyone.
But it is allowed to be known by you.
If you find yourself wanting something to return to between these reflections, in the actual moment a pattern like this one takes hold, I also built an app called Settle and Source. It offers a ninety second guided practice for exactly the kind of moment this reflection has been describing, the gap between noticing an urge and knowing what to do with it. It is not a replacement for anything here, simply another door, in case it is the right one for you. https://settleandsource.com
