2989: Why an AI Market Crash Is Actually the Best-Case Scenario
    Oct 17 2026

In this episode of Macro, Micro and Small Cap News, we explore why there may only be two ways the current AI boom plays out—and why a 2000-style dot-com market crash might actually be the less damaging outcome.

We examine the growing systemic vulnerabilities surrounding autonomous AI agents, energy security, and grid resilience, alongside three urgent red flags signaling that the AI infrastructure bubble may be cracking under debt and speculative pressure:

    • CoreWeave’s Bond Slump: A $40B market cap sitting on $30B of net debt, secondary bond yields spiking toward 15%, and the systemic risk of financing short-lived GPU hardware with high-yield debt.

    • Pulled AI IPOs: Weak investor demand forcing listings like Firmus ($5B), AirTrunk REIT, and SB Energy to be shelved or paused.

    • Asian Semiconductor Plunge: The KOSPI sliding 8% and triggering circuit breakers as SK Hynix and Samsung slump on fears of hyperscaler capex cuts.

    Micro & UK Small-Cap Focus:

    • Why the Budget Bank Tax Favors Funding Circle (#FCH): How proposed tax hikes on high-street clearing banks force legacy lenders to retreat from SME financing, driving prime small business borrowers toward capital-light, levy-exempt platforms.

    • Weekly Market Movers: A review of this week’s top risers and fallers across the London market, including Corero Network Security (#CNS), LBG Media (#LBG), TPXimpact (#TPX), ActiveOps (#AOM), Filtronic (#FTC), and EnSilica (#ENSI).

Plus our regular check on key macro indices, bonds, and commodities.

  • 2990: THE AI SELL-OFF ISN’T OVER: WATCH FOR THE CANARY IN THE COAL MINE

2990: THE AI SELL-OFF ISN’T OVER: WATCH FOR THE CANARY IN THE COAL MINE
    Oct 24 2026
THE AI SELL-OFF ISN’T OVER: WATCH FOR THE CANARY IN THE COAL MINEPodcast DescriptionIn this episode of Macro, Micro and Small Cap News with Sharepickers.com, we examine why the AI sell-off may just be getting started. While capital pours into chips and data centers, a massive bottleneck in electrical grid connections is colliding with ballooning capex, negative free cash flows, and soaring high-yield debt among neo-clouds. Across the macro landscape, we break down falling UK job vacancies driven by micro-firm cutbacks, the Chancellor’s stance on Capital Gains Tax, record property asking price reductions, rising inflation, and the approval of the Jackdaw gas field. We also cover widespread AI-driven corporate redundancies, South Korea's capex-driven market slide, France’s surging sovereign bond spread, and oil crossing $117 amid depleted strategic reserves and refinery bottlenecks. Finally, we review top UK small-cap risers and fallers, highlight key stocks to watch, and wrap up with the unbelievable story of a civil servant juggling eight full-time government roles at once.Summary of Topics CoveredThe AI Bottleneck & Big Tech Sell-Off: A severe structural timeline mismatch is emerging between ordering chips (under one year), building warehouse shells (two years), and securing high-voltage power connections from utilities (5 to 10 years). Because AI processors rapidly depreciate within three to four years, idle capacity burns massive capital. Hyperscalers such as Meta, Alphabet, Amazon, and Oracle are turning free cash flow negative as capex outpaces operating cash flow, turning to expensive debt issuance. The canary in the coal mine sits with over-leveraged neo-clouds stockpiling GPUs and hardware makers vulnerable to sudden order pullbacks. UK Macroeconomic Developments:Labor Market: Total job vacancies hit a five-year low, driven entirely by smaller firms (1–9 employees) cutting 21,000 vacancies due to elevated wage and operational costs, with construction suffering the steepest quarterly decline (-20.5%).Taxation & Housing: Chancellor John Healey signals he will not increase Capital Gains Tax ahead of the Budget to prevent capital flight. Concurrently, UK home sellers reduced asking prices on over 3,000 properties per day during September—the highest rate in 15 years.Inflation & Energy: UK inflation accelerated to 3.5% in September, led by a 29.8% surge in motor fuel prices. Meanwhile, the UK government approved the long-delayed Jackdaw North Sea gas field to supply up to 6% of domestic gas production alongside a £2bn Energy Wealth Fund. Global Tech Trends & Sovereign Debt:Semiconductor Volatility & AI Redundancies: South Korea’s KOSPI has pulled back 40% from its June peak due to hyperscaler capex anxieties affecting Samsung and SK Hynix. Corporate tech-driven layoffs continue to mount globally, with Barclays cutting 5,000 roles and sector-wide AI redundancies topping 150,000.French Sovereign Bond Pressures: France’s 10-year yields have climbed sharply, with the French-German yield spread blowing out to 1.7% (compared to typical ranges of 0.5%–0.8%) as debt-to-GDP reaches 116% and debt interest payments near €65bn.Commodities (Oil Supply Squeeze): Crude oil reached $117 per barrel. With the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve at a 40-year low (around 283 million barrels) and China holding its estimated 1.2–1.3 billion barrels for domestic needs, emergency buffers are gone. Global refinery capacity bottlenecks are further compounding price spikes for finished fuels. UK Small-Cap Risers, Fallers & Stocks to Watch:Notable Movers: Coverage of weekly price action across eEnergy (#EAAS), Filtronic (#FTC), Light Science Technologies (#LST), Ixico (#IXI), Ashtead Technology (#AT.), and Hardide (#HDD).Stocks to Watch: Funding Circle (#FCH) rebounding off recent corrections to hit a one-month high, and cybersecurity firm Intercede (#IGP) testing 52-week highs following AI-assisted vulnerability discoveries across widespread PHP servers. Fun Story of the Week: A civil servant who stood trial after fraudulently holding eight concurrent full-time public sector jobs between 2020 and 2023—contracting up to 183 hours in a single 168-hour week and earning over £284,000.NOTHING IN THIS PODCAST OR ANYTHING ASSOCIATED WITH SHAREPICKERS.COM SHOULD BE REGARDED AS INVESTMENT ADVICE.
