When I was a boy growing up in 1960s Los Angeles, some of my greatest adventures began with an ordinary Saturday outing with Dad and my little sister, Lee Ann.

Through my young eyes, familiar places became mysterious foreign lands, crowded with exotic sights, strange aromas, and fascinating characters. My imagination carried me far beyond the streets of Los Angeles, where adventure seemed to wait around every corner.

Join me as I return to that version of Los Angeles, where an ordinary boy with a wild imagination could journey to the farthest reaches of the known world and still be home in time for lunch.

Coming Saturday, October 10: The Rocket Kid Chronicles, Chapter 15: The Grand Bazaar

    February 9, 1964.

Four young men from Liverpool appeared on our television, and American culture shifted before our eyes.

My parents weren’t quite sure what to make of them. But somewhere beneath the screaming, I heard something I would never forget.

Prehistoric creatures and adventures in inner space, and all for the low, low price of 25 cents.

Step into the Wayback Machine with me and travel back to the 1960s, when, at the age of eight, I came face to face with prehistory. Well, sort of. And then ventured into an entire world hidden deep inside the human body.

It was quite an adventure for a quarter.

Do you remember your first crush?

Not the high-school kind. I mean the first one, back when romance involved shared desks, playgrounds, and secret notes. The person who made you feel something you didn’t yet have a name for.

Mine happened in second grade. Her name was Debra.

    Chapter 11: The Miniature Kingdom

    The Rocket Kid Chronicles

A childhood visit to Disneyland. A little sister enchanted by a miniature world. And one devoted older brother with a shovel, a backyard, and far more imagination than good judgment. “The Miniature Kingdom” is a charming, humorous journey back to childhood, when love inspired daring ideas and consequences were something you worried about later.

Chapter 10: Not All Heroes Wear Capes

    The Rocket Kid Chronicles

In this chapter of The Rocket Kid Chronicles, I remember my older brother Art, who was far more than a brother to me. It’s a story about childhood, adventure, and the people whose presence quietly helps make us who we become.

  • Beep-Beep and Beyond
    Aug 29 2026

Saturday mornings in the 1960s belonged to kids.

There was no school, nowhere we had to be, and for a few glorious hours the television belonged entirely to us. We settled onto the floor with bowls of sugary cereal and disappeared into worlds where the ordinary rules rarely applied.

Those mornings offered adventure, absurdity, heroes, villains, impossible dangers, and a peculiar kind of logic that every child understood without explanation. Then, sooner or later, Mom sent us outside, where much of what we had just watched followed us into our own games and imaginations.

“Beep-Beep and Beyond” is a lighthearted trip back to the Saturday-morning ritual that helped define childhood for a generation, when a bowl of cereal, a television set, and an active imagination were enough to take you almost anywhere.

Remember when changing the channel required getting off the couch, television sets were pieces of furniture, and good reception sometimes depended on a pair of rabbit ears wrapped in aluminum foil?

In Chapter 8 of The Rocket Kid Chronicles, “Adjusting Rabbit Ears,” I look back at the arrival of television, the wonder of our first color set, and those evenings when three networks, a stubborn antenna, and a glowing screen were enough to keep an entire family entertained.

A nostalgic trip back to when television still felt like a glimpse of the future.
